Chuck, to run tubeless what is the best valve? - is there an advantage to being tubeless?, I have new tyres and correct tubes, just not got round to fitting.Chuck W. wrote:Lance, that's the only choice we have right now for the CORRECT NDMD mule tire. There is an NDT tire in the correct size, but it's not correct for a mule. Your mule will look so good with new tires on it, you won't even notice!
BTW - When you mount the new tires, be careful not to trap air between the tube and the tire. The tire fits the rim so tight (in fact, mine are mounted tubeless!) that it's possible to trap a lot of air in the tire and after a while, the air will leak out around the valve stem and you'll think you have a problem with the tube when you really don't.

Ive been working on this a little bit everyday. There's a still a few things I want to do to it. I want to put the battery on-off switch thru the side and a battery tender charge port thru the side so I don't have to always have the box open if it's on charge (I've learned the hard way with AGM type batteries to just leave them on a trickle charger and they last WAY longer). I also want to put some kinda strut on it to keep the lid up instead of fighting with it when you are going in and out of it. It looks kinda rough at the moment but once it has a coat of paint on it the appearance will improve greatly.

Dr Lance
Once again amazing work! You should build your own Lancemule. It would be fantastic! You might want to add some type of vent for your battery though...hydrogen gas build up from the battery could blow up that beautiful box...!

I like this valve stem for tubeless tires, I've been running tubeless for 5-6 years now with this stem and have had no problems.Chuck, to run tubeless what is the best valve? - is there an advantage to being tubeless?, I have new tyres and correct tubes, just not got round to fitting.

Lance, great work! I would recommend you either install some type vent or leave the door open during battery charging.

I'm pretty sure that a vent is not required. It's a drycell (AGM) non-spillable battery. Plus the box isn't air/vapor tight anyways.Chuck W. wrote:Lance, great work! I would recommend you either install some type vent or leave the door open during battery charging.

Well this is done for now. When I wire it I'll have to put some holes and grommets in the back wall for the cables to get out but that can all wait till I put it on. Plus it needs some weatherstripping on the door.
Now to remove the bed and get serious on the restoration.

Hopefully I'll get the chassis parted this weekend. Then starts the cleaning, blasting and painting.

I'm pretty sure that the shift rods should be straight.
That being said, once you finish the restoration of your mule, you should build a quantity of those Recoiless Rifle boxes. I'm sure they would sell. Plus it appears that the workmanship is outstanding! You have mad skills!

Nice work Lance, how much trouble was it removing the deck? Any issues with corroded fasteners? BTW, are you going to try removing the bolts on the frame tubes, or plan to just leave them alone for now.

I have the sheetmetal business contacts for making the boxes but I have no original to copy. If I was to reproduce them I'd want to make them as close to original as possible. I have never even seen a 106 box for sale so I guessed on mine and some dimension Charles Witt provided to me. There's a ton of hours in the little latches too. The labor to make them might drive the price to an unrealistic number.Dbaumanjr wrote:I'm pretty sure that the shift rods should be straight.

It will all come apart. The only thing I don't plan on getting into are the axles, they seem to work fine and seem to be leak free now that I replaced all the seals on the ends. The trans has a lot of leaks as the pictures show so it'll get resealed and the engine has a funny clunk in it that my neighbor the ex-motorpool sergeant says isn't right. I suspected it not being right but then having never seen/heard or owned a Mule before I really didn't know.Auto Shop teacher wrote:Nice work Lance, how much trouble was it removing the deck? The deck came off pretty easy. The fasteners were not that bad considering the potential for Galvanic corrosion. There's on screw stuck in the deck that holds the air cleaner box on that I'm gonna have to drill out or something cause it's not coming out with the hammer I'll just carefully drill it out and not risk messing up the deck by trying to use force.

Could the noise be in the magneto? Mine makes quite a clunk especially when I shut the engine off.
