Engine swap labor

Post by ohiohmmwv » Tue Jun 21, 2016 4:14 pm

What would I expect to pay to have my 6.2 swapped with my 6.5 turbo I bought? Just labor.

Did you get the correct exhaust, too?

I did just an engine swap in a couple days. That included swapping everything from one block to the other.

I've seen Retiredwarhorses post elsewhere:

i charge 5k labor for this replacement, customer supplies motor...that can run from 5-10k.
i can tell you that done right, your talking an additional 1k in various items like hoses, clamps, new sensors...it just All depends how much of a mess the previous mechanic made. I highly suggest you find a shop that has done H1 work...I redo people's work weekly on these trucks.

Thanks Dog....I have the conversion down to about 5k in labor. You just never know what you run into once you get started.
But I've done about 10 of these in the past 24mos....from H1's to HMMWV''s and it seems to all pretty much come out the same on labor. I try to leave it up the customer on purchasing parts from a list I've compiled. But there's a few items such as the body harness that you just can't get around at 1000-1300.00 bucks, that and shipping costs of the truck.

Hey guys,

I’m looking at purchasing a complete 6.5 turbo driveline including the 4l80E, and 242 transfer case to replace my current 6.2 three speed driveline.

My question is can anyone compile a list of what I will need to do the conversion parts wise? Every forum I go to has bits and pieces of info and I get 100 different answers. I was told there is a forum on here that has step by step instructions with pics but I can’t seem to find it.

Also I will be going with a stand alone TCM. From black dog customs.

You can get the very same standalone controller for about $300 cheaper if you buy direct from the mfg.

Thanks for that info Retired Warhorse! I’ll be sure to do that.

I’ve read numerous forums and you seem to be the guru on this swap. Will I be able to modify my 6.2 engine harness to accommodate the 6.5TD? Also I already have spacers on my springs will that give me enough height to clear the turbo?

As long as the body is lifted about 3/4-1in
We don’t Mod old harnesses, we do OEM work...so Turbo gets a turbo harness.

Spring spacers give room for tires. You need body spacers for a turbo.

Thanks for clarifying that Jason I was a little confused.

So is there anyone in this forum that can tell me the parts I need for the swap? I have a complete 6.5 turbo driveline to replace my 6.2 driveline. Looking for any insight y’all have to offer.

I’m not concerned with OEM as my truck has already been extremely customized to my taste, now I just want more power and “cruizeability”.
