Picked Up A '41 Can on Saturday

Post by d42jeep » Thu Oct 29, 2015 6:53 pm

I hit the Concord, CA flea market on Saturday and chanced on this 1941 Nesco can. I think I will leave the finish alone.

Thanks, Reg. As nice as the '41 can was, I didn't feel comfortable using it for gas storage on the back of the Jeep due to some interior rust issues. I found this one listed on the auction site and it arrived today. It's a 1943 can with some patina but looks virtually new on the inside. Here are some pictures.

Nice Arvin jerrycan - one of my favourites.

It has details on the handle unique to this manufacturer and the writing is more stylized and, I think, slightly larger

Reg,
Thanks for the identification. Finally I have a vintage can that I'm willing to put gas in. I picked up a Christmas gift for the Jeep off of the auction site that arrived yesterday. It came from a seller in Georgia.

Nice cans Don, a huge bonus is when they are clean enough to use them.

Is the date under the handle or on the bottom?

On this particular can it is under the handle. In my experience, on gas cans this was done
only in 1943, only by some manufacturers.

Sorry to detract from the awesome galvanized can, but I have a question based on Luca's comment.

What is the rarity and desirability of an ISN made 43 dated, under-the-handle-marked can? Useable condition but missing lid.

At least SIX mfgers chose to mark their cans under the handle in 1942 be they gas and/or water cans and several also did in 1943.
To answer your question about an N.S.I. '43 can....I have only ONE pic of that kind and I think that would, if we even HAD the production numbers for such a can, it could very well be one a collector would be interested in....again.... condition, condition, condition...

It says ISN, not NSI.

I hit a Jeep oriented estate sale in Napa this morning and picked up my first water can. It's a 1944 Nesco and seems to be rust free on the inside. I was looking for the W on the exterior but I only found one under the handles with the rest of the markings. To answer a question posted above, my '43 can is marked under the handles as well. Here are a few pictures.

Looks great Don. And, you seem to now have an unintentional NESCO can collection happening over there. Better collect them all!

Just to avoid confusion: barring the screw lidded 41 ones, ALL the Water cans , whatever brand, were marked on top, under the handle. No W on the side.

The marking of GAS cans on top, rather than on the bottom, is an exception that mostly happened in 1943.

This peculiarity makes them unusual, and possibly enhances their value. How much? I do not know.

I found these items at an estate sale yesterday. Unlike my other cans, I am unable to find any markings whatsoever on this water can. Does anyone have any thoughts about a can with no markings? Thanks.
