M5 Bomb Trailer Tool Question
Has anyone ever seen or acquired one of the three "Hook, bomb single" bomb handling tools for the M5 trailer. They look like a hay hook. Just wondering what they look like up close and if they were stamped "U.S." Any info is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Red

Here's a poor photo of the hooks. Since then they've been sandblasted and painted - I could get a better picture in a few days if you like.

Yes, please! We need photos so we can continue to search for the tools. Do the single hooks have solid steel handles?

Finally had time to measure up!
Handle is solid bar. The dimensions on the photos should be all you need to make one - the three I have are all identical. Nothing stamped on them.

That's great info, thanks for posting the dimensions. Do you have the bars which hooks that lift the bombs?

I'll post a pic of what I have and let me know what you need.
I need details of the rails on the M5 deck which nobody seems to be certain about - anyone??

Re: M5 Bomb Trailer Tool Question
Most of us who have the trucks do not have the tools. I know it can be a hassle to get dimensions for stuff but since those tools don't seem to exist in the wild, we have to fabricate them ourselves. And the manuals don't have true dimensions. Any help is greatly appreciated!!

Re: M5 Bomb Trailer Tool Question
This is what I have:
Does anyone have the list of supplied equipment? I'm sure I've seen a photograph somewhere, but it isn't in TM 9-765, the M6 manual, nor the M5 trailerTM.
A couple of the C spanners (presumably for nose cones) appear to be roughly made - possibly made up "on base"?
What else if anything is missing from the set of gear?

Here's a set of 4 leg chains in use - I wonder what the short 4 (wire) leg set I have were?

Re: M5 Bomb Trailer Tool Question
Wow, you have a nice set of tools there. I've never seen the ring with chains before nor the pin wrenches in any photos. I'd agree they are probably made locally for specific jobs. I'd love to get the dimensions of the bars, both round a flat, that have hooks on them. They must be 3/8th think at least? I'll find a photo of the tools and post it.

Re: M5 Bomb Trailer Tool Question
Tony,
I got back into town last night after being gone for work and when I pulled this up this morning I was in awe at what you have shared. Thanks again for posting all the pics!!! I know there are a lot of guys out there restoring M5 bomb trailers and M6 bomb trucks that will be using all of what you have shared for reference. Just wanted to say thanks again for posting.

Re: M5 Bomb Trailer Tool Question
This illustration from the M5 trailer manual shows only the 3 bomb hooks and 2 x tube-type lifting bars.
The M6 truck manual lists no bomb handling equipment and only covers lubrication of the supplied M1 lift and the truck's winch.
So where do the plate-type spreader bars and other equipment feature?
Anyone come across a manual for the M1 lift?

Re: M5 Bomb Trailer Tool Question
Yet another tool has come to light as a result of studying wartime pictures. Would need to be pretty strong tube - my guess it is solid bar.
Note also the winch rope on the M6 - a local field conversion to PTO-driven winch mounted underfloor behind gearbox:

Re: M5 Bomb Trailer Tool Question
It's a faster expedient. They just hung the long bar upside down by the hook and used chains attached to the lower lug of the bomb. OK if they don't hit bumps.
