AL VRY 4204 6 VOLT 40 AMP NEG GROUND VOLTAGE REGULATOR

Post by Joe Gopan » Fri Jan 08, 2010 6:09 am

I have one NOS left out of a few dozen bought surplus from Presque Isle Air Force Base in the 50's. All had yellow serviceable tags marked G-503 Jeep. The boxed ones are long gone. I sold them for years to MB/GPW owners. According to the Tables in the Autolite TM9-1825B, these are identical to the VRY 4203. I have studied Army parts interchanges for 40 years and have not found an application. They are identical in every respect except for the Autolite number. All were finished in smooth lusterless OD.

I have one left, curious if an application for this part No. has surfaced. At one time I thought there was a reference to it fitting the GTB, but the GTB definitely uses the VRY 4203, same as G-503 Willys.

This is NOS and meets the G-503 Electrical spec. Will trade for NOS WWII CCKW cosmetic items.

The AL-VRY 4204 is identical to the VRY-4203 MB/GPW regulators, it is 6 VOLT 40 Amp, Negative Ground, only difference is the model number. These were all NOS 40's Yellow Tagged (Serviceable) from Presque Isle AFB ME and marked for G-503 on the tags. I have sold these for years as MB Voltage Regulators. Anyone know of an application for the AL-VRY-4204A?

Joel
It is on the specs page of my big Autolite manual, but I paged though the applications and did not see it. There is no index or cross reference in this manual, so you have to scroll through page by page through the applications. I will try again later, it is easy to miss one number.

Thanks. I have it listed in TM9-1825B Auto Lite Electrical Equipment, but not in any WWII interchanges I have. It has same features as VRY 4203, and we sold these to WWII Jeep owners for decades.
At one time I thought I saw it listed for GTB, but the TM10 foe GTB does not show it.

Found it in a 10 page 3-12-54 service bulletin. Just says Ford and Military. No year or model noted. This would support your GTB recollection.

Thank you Jeff.
I also recall reading the note in a that the VRY 4204A was for vertical mounting as in the GTB but I do not remember the source, nor do I understand why there would be a difference in a voltage regulator specific to being mounted horizontal or vertical.

Could the different part number be just because of the OD paint finish?

Wouldn't think so, that appears to be a Willys sheet metal color thing. Too bad there is no way to connect a Willys number to it. The finish is smooth with a cork gasket. Might keep it far a spare as I have some NOS VRY-4203G's sealed in foil that I occasionally trade.
Will post a pic when camera is working again, I misplaced the charger.

Kind of an aside but I have looked at, tested and gone through the 25 amp rated voltage regulators (can't remember the number right now) and compated them to the Jeep 40 amp regulator and I kind find no difference except the tag.

Since the regulator only controls the field current to the generator, I can't see why they would rate the same regulator at two different amp ratings.

Did you check the Autolite numbers of the components? Am positive different part numbers will be discovered.

Joel...what is the DATE CODE on the VRY 4204 regulator?

This VRY-4203A is dated "9V" or September 1941....does yours have a date code in front of the serial number like this one does:

Joel's VRY-4204A seems to be a wartime regulator with a "12X" date code (December 1943). It is for a "FORD" but it is not for a G-503. Something like a GTB or a G8T or maybe another Ford WWII vehicle.
