Ford GPW Factory photos 1942 1944.
Hello all,
here are some Ford GPW factory photos I have finally located after a time consuming search.
They span a considerable period and hopefully can fill a few more gaps in the what is known from a Factory standpoint.
Do note there are conditions set by owner, thehenryford website of these images and I have set these out below as required by their use.
Respect these moderate conditions and we may be able to obtain some more.
Thank you
Bill.
1.
Titled "Ford GPW (Jeep) Assembly Line, Lincoln Plant, Detroit, Michigan, 1942" Photo dated 8 Sept. 1942
2.
Titled "Ford GPW (Jeep) in Woods" Photo dated 29 April 1943
Possibly a GPW on the test track prior to acceptance by the Govt.
3.
Titled "Ford GPW (Jeeps) Parked in Drive-Away Garage, 1942" Photo dated 16 March 1942
4.
Titled "Workers Crating Ford GPW (Jeeps) for Shipping, Ford Motor Company Lincoln Plant, Dearborn, Michigan, 1944"
Photo dated 09 October 1944
5.
Titled "James O'Connor, Foreman of Final Assembly Line at Ford Rouge Plant, 1943"
Lots of hard to find detail in this image!
Photo dated 29th June 1943

Thanks Jon,
yes there is lots of detail in there, the OD cross over tube as you mentioned, metal braid fuel line, tinned patch on the engine plate, no "D" washers on the coil, clear view of the Cad plated generator mount bolts, nuts up on the motor mount, over spray on the starter motor, etc. I enjoy seeing the people responsible for the production, adds an extra dimension to things.
cheers
Bill.

As noted by a friend , can some one speculate / explain , why are so may Jeeps missing the spare wheel/tires in that big line up?

I don't see the varnish type protection coating on the crossover tube, the head or any of the other places that my survivor Dec 44 GPW has. Did they spray that on after assembly was complete? Is the lack of spare tires attributable to the rubber shortages they were experiencing at the time?

Everyone else notes details of GPW engines; I feel strange for noticing the date on the second photo: 29 April 1943. Spring came really late that year, I guess...
Is it true real Jeeps have flat fenders?

Re: Ford GPW Factory photos 1942 1944.
I used to go to the Ann Arbor, MI area every year at the end of April for a few years in the late 80's. I always noticed that almost nothing had bloomed yet, compared to here in California, where the spring bloom was almost done....California has plenty of faults. A long winter isn't one of them, thankfully...
Great GPW photos! Hopefully you can post some more.

Re: Ford GPW Factory photos 1942 1944.
Steve, on of Frank Buck's unrestored original jeeps has the "varnish" coating on the engine and on the tub fasteners , lug nuts and wing bolts also.
It is believed that his was a preservative done prior to a storage operation.
My #s matching GPW has a few indications of this material also. As I believe that my jeep was put into storage soon after manufacture date.
These photos are great! I think the variation of painted parts changed over the production life as more efficient methods came into use.
Ford and Willys billed for every little piece and cost to apply a finish as required by contract. From uncrating/moving bodies around to touch up paint, all where documented and billed.
The government did not want to pay for any "extras" and the manufacturers wanted reimbursement for every process and part.
A good example is the discontinuance of crating jeeps for shipment, too costly/time consuming to break them down, crate and reassemble.
Cheers, Ed

Those are great photos! I was thinking: why did he put his arm up there like that? Didn't he realize that 70 years later this photo would be scrutinized so?
