USMC - the right war colo(u)r

Post by DocUwe » Sat Sep 29, 2012 11:59 am

Good evening,
I have one question for the European friends:
I am looking for the right RAL number for the USMC war paint (MB/GPW). Can anyone tell it? It is not possible to send any paint from USA to Europe so I must try this way. I have to restore a GPW in this colo(u)r.
Thank you!
Uwe

As far as I remember there is no 100% matching RAL paint.
The USMC color wasn't mixed using a RAL code.

Uwe,
Maybe you can find some USMC Forest green paint at the local hobby shop, Testors brand, for example, paint it on a surface then have it scanned by the local auto paint supplier, and have some custom blended to match? http://www.testors.com/products/136314" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Alternately, maybe a US paint supplier can send you a color mix code that can be used in the EU? Maybe even a color chip that can be scanned locally?

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your advices!
Is there a difference between forest green and USMC green? Is the colo(u)r nearly the same post war? Which supplier do you recommend delivering the colo(u)r? I have seen many possible variations looking on the restored USMC war jeeps. Is it more blue or green or dark?
I have these pics - hope anyone is agreed using these pics :|

Which is now the right war USMC colo(u)r?

Doc,

Two of those photos are jeeps that I have done.

USMC 102076 was painted with two part TM Ord 9 USMC green. That is a poor photo of the color and not representative of the color.

The jeep with the hood open and on jack stands was painted with single stage Gillispie (sp ?) Semi Gloss USMC green. I have also used Gillispie (sp?) single stage flat USMC green, but it doesn't hold up well in the weather. The semi gloss mentioned above will flatten out.

The 1943 GPW USMC ambulance jeep I restored was painted with a government contract USMC green. This jeep was at the MVPA convention in Portland in 2008. The paint was also a single stage paint.

With single stage paint, you just mix the paint and the reducer. With two part paint, you mix the paint, the hardner and the reducer.

The photo of the fire extinguisher is mine.

It is WO-A-3266

Here is my MZ-1.

My color was matched using the original color on the top of the frame at the machine gun mount.

I used a mixture of custom mixed paint and

Gillespie shown above.

Other items I pinted just the forest green... shovel and jerry can for example. They looked a little different when just painted... see here:

But now, after 7 years mostly sitting in the garage the shovel and body look the same color.

Oh, to answer your question... I think the color is suppose to be the same, Lusterless Forest Green.

Rapco sells the 34052 but I don't know if they go overseas.

If you look at my photos you can see the same color looks different in shade and sun and from different angles... it is the same paint and color.

Fine, thank you for your fast answers!!
I will do the following:
I want to ask Rapco if he would paint a sheet metal and send it to me. Rapco denied sending cans overseas because of the safety...
What do you guess, does Rapco do this (of course I pay for the sheet, the paint and the postage)?
I think the only "modus operandi"...is comparing this painted sheet with my RAL schedule:
Image

Do you recommend using two-component paint or an extra transparent coat of painting? I want the semigloss appearance.
Thank you!

Uwe, I think you won't find the correct match in the RAL register.

But take your color sample to a PROSOL http://www.prosol-farben.de/ store near you.

I've been there on tuesday to find a match for a very special color.
They've got loads and loads of sample books with the codes to mix the paint.

I'd bet you find an almost 100% match there.

I was just looking through my RAL register...

I THINK the truth is somewhere between RAL 6016 and RAL 6026
But that's just a wild guess.

Thank you, as you see above, the wider RAL-2- (5 digits not 4) is exacter finding the right colo(u)r. Thank you for your link!!!
