Hey!

Thanks for posting a picture of your spare mount tire system. That's exactly what I want to do with mine. where did you get the parts to do that? I'll appreciate all the info you can provide.

thanks,

Joel

i got the parts from a truck wrecking yard. all i did was buy a spare tire lifting device off a small pickup, and mounted it to the frame rails underneath the trailer tub by spanning the distance between the last two frame members using 3/16"
thick angle iron from the hardware store. then i just cranked it up into position the same as i would on my ford ranger. since i need to do a tear down and complete paint job anyway, it seemed like this was the best time to do this, rather than after it looks nice.

Ron:

Thanks for the advise. Unfortunately, my trailer has been restored and well I have to make the mod afterwards. I didn't think about that before hand you know. I should have but didn't. I was into too much rush to get the trailer done that I completely forgot about that. Do yo think you can post some pics of the assembly without the spare tire on it? I would like to see the hardware installed. That way I have a better idea of what you are talking about.

Thanks,

Joel

Ron, I got your email but when I went to reply from my phone I accidentally deleted it  Very nice! I thought about mounting one to mine as well but That would mean another tire to buy!

That is a great job. I saw another one not too long ago that used a spare tire winch from a small truck like you did.

joel.all you need is 2 pieces of angle iron to span the distance between the last 2 frame members, then bolt them to the frame. after that, bolt the lift device to the angle iron, crank it down through the center of the wheel, and crank it up into position. i used grade 8 bolts in a 5/16" size by 1", with flat and lock washers.

bill, the email was about 2 mity mites on ebay, as i thought they might interest you.

Another way of mounting a spare on a 1/4t trailer is doing what the French did to theirs:

I'm not sure if I'm gonna keep the spare carrier or remove it. I'll be towing the trailer behind my Dodge WC51 so the spare from that is a tad too big....

I thought I remember holding my 7.00 X 16 up there... and it looked to interfere with the axle movement...
or I just thought the fame was too weak on my M100...
so I did some other things...

Made a front carrier mnt.

Image Image Image

then I also made it so the spare could be hung at the rear...

Image

Image

for me... the spare is usually at the front...
and this is what hangs off the backside...

Image

view of both...

Image

 avoids damage (cuts n bruises) to the spare tire... when I roll the trails

just sharing options

Tacodell, I'd guard the WWII lunette with your life! They're like hen's teeth these days.

LoL... no doubt... it's probably worth more then the rest of the trailer

think I'll make up one of those Lunette locks... and weld the lower plate to the receiver extension.
Then they'll have to work harder for it.

and just for those... whom like to drool... :P

tacodell, that's a very nice set up, i really like the way it hinges up after loading. my primary concern was not to alter the tub's appearance or affect it's wall strength, and secondly to minimize to the degree possible it's overall appearance as original. is that one of those camp tent setups mounted to the top of the trailer? overall, that looks like a very good rig to go off road with.

I used 2 pieces of kindorf, cut to fit up inside the frame rails and a spare tire boat trailer u-bolt.

Hi:

What is "kindorf"? Is it perforated angle iron, i.e.: angle iron with holes evenly spaced along its length? Your photos shows a nice clean installation; I like it! :D

Anyone who is a Sparky (ie: electrician) uses this stuff. My brother is a Sparky and gave me the stuff. It is U channel with holes - they hang lights on it under false ceilings.
The big u-bolt is from Cabelas - called an economy spare tire carrier - 12.99.

We cut 2 pieces to fit in between the frame rails - put the ubolt down from the top first - then marked holes in each frame rail for the bolts.

I use my trailer for hunting - so I know it is not proper restoration - but if you are out in the middle of nowhere here in SD - you need a spare. I have a NDT tire now instead of the orig Firestone. And you may note I used 2 lug nuts to lock it down. Like any spare if you tighten it down -the air pressure keeps tension on the setup.

Thanks for your compliment...
There is a write up for it here... but dang if I wanna look for that :|
Yes there's an RTT mounted as well as other things done to her...
btw... everything is bolt on... with little, if any real modification that might alter the tub or the trailer.

You can see the most current situation and full build article here... http://www.tacomaterritory.com/forum/sh ... p?t=152233" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
or... you could search this forum, under my username... and find it as well.

All my mods could be done to the M416 as well... But they would be custom, as the M100 does not share similar dimensions.
