Canvas Top

Post by pespisjm » Sat Dec 10, 2011 11:05 am

Does anyone know if the early Mite had a narrower top than the late model. The reason I ask is I have a top that I thought would fit my M38a1, but it is about 6 inches too narrow and about 2 feet too short. Any ideas??

Thanks,
John

The wheelbase of the M422 is only 65" vs the M38A1's 81" which is almost 2 ft shorter than the M38A1. That could be the reason why your top is too short. As to width, I would guess it is shrinking from age and drying out in the sun. The M422's did have an MWO M38A1 style windshield which the top slipped into just like the M38A1.
Dave from Webee Webbing who posted above must have the specific width dimensions of M38A1 vs the M422 tops.

There was a top made for the original factory M422 "thin" windshield which was narrower than the later MWO M38A1 style windshield. If you have an early top all of us Mite guys would be anxious to see it. Please post pics.

Guys, this is a NOS top, never been in the sun, thought it was for my M38a1 and just got it back from the canvas shop from having a new rear window installed and a few seams reinforced. Pics attached.. Measurements approx 50 inches across and 53 from the front to the seam for the back side seam.

You can call me if you have any questions, I would be interested in selling.

That looks like a top for the GPW/MB.

This has a curved profile in front like the M38a1, thought the MB was flat across the front?

You can tell it's definitely not a standard M422 or A1 top since the rear window is way too small and it doesn't have the zippers running up the rear panel which is a feature unique to the mite.
It also doesn't look like the thin windshield top which is shown below.
Looks like an M38 top.

The window indicates M38 or M38A1. Buckles would lead me towards M38A1. Unfortunately your photos didn't show me any of the construction details to differentiate between the two. A photo of the windshield header portion, showing the inside (so that I can see the construction detail), will yield an answer with an explanation on shrinkage percentages.

Not sure what top you have, but the civilian CJ5 top will fit on the Mite with a small amount of modification. So, basically it is the same size. The early MB tops were narrower. What kind of fitment does the front of the top have? Will it fit the later Mite wind shield?

it has the same bead lock on the front as the m38a1. but it is about 6 inches narrower and about 2 feet too short for the M38a1. This top has been stored inside for the last 30 years.

Thin windshield Mite? That's a prototype! (I've never seen that pic. Thanks for posting it.)

Did the prototype Mite's top also fit the shorties?
