Hi Maurizio,
I just aquired a Converto trailer and am restoring it simulataneously with another Converto trailer belonging to my buddy Mark. Both have their original data tags. The numbers are 0877898 (mine) and 0877919 (Mark's). My trailer had been owned by a farmer who used it but judging by its condition had to have been stored in a barn for the last 60 years. All metal is 99% there. The only items rusted away were the 2 springs for the tail gate latch and release rod. It had all the other original parts with the exception of the tailgate release handle but the release rod was still there. The farmer had screwed a "T" handle onto the rod. The reflectors were the originals, 2 amber (one on each side) and one red (on the tail gate). The multi-layers of paint also did their share of preserving the metal. It also has the original reinforced combat rims. The tailgate has the operational trap door. I had the tub sandblasted and couldn't believe my eyes when the paint had been removed. There on each side of the trailer the original stensiled numbers appeared as if they had etched themselves into the metal. Mark took photos. There were four distinct lines.
The top line read: CAP 1/2 TON
The second line: WT 690 LBS
The third line: U.S.A.
The fourth line: 0877898

The numbers on the side matched the numbers on the data plate.
The data plate lists the year of manufacture as 1945.

Do you know if the trailers were marked for the unit's that used them? For the European theater, did they paint paint circled or plain stars on them and if so where?

Hi Norman, your two trailers were already in my database, under the nickname emmado22 from NY ...you probably bought them from him.

I will be anyway so interested in seeing the pictures that your friend took after sandblasting!

...and, no, I'm not aware about any picture took on ETA about Converto's... thus, ...no stars, no circles... 8)

I have a converto that a former owner removed the data plate for an unknown reason. The second owner gave the original to me with the ground off rivets. It had absolutely been used for concrete as have the other three I know of around here. It has the tailights and amber reflectors added. I have restored it somewhat and would like to add it to your list. I am missing one reinforced wheel, cast dump handle and spring shield/housing on dump gate.

Hi Maurizio, I don't see the trailers listed that I mentioned in my previous post. They are:
0877898 Hopewell Junction, NY, USA
0877919 Marlboro, NY, USA
My buddy Mark will post the photos of the miraculous numbers that remained etched into the metal after the sandblasting.

hi Bob! :D

how are you?... good purchase!

I will add it to my database... and feel free to post in this forum your requests... many parts were made available in the past years from collectors that wanted to reproduce them firstly from themself... they made some in excess to lower costs... thus, few are still here around...

you will find the Converto a very special and interesting trailer... so hard... even if a little bit noisy behind a jeep... 8)

a good item to collect, anyway.
