Replacement Air Filter

I am looking for an inexpensive air filter to run on an M38A1. I am not looking for correct, just functional. The carb is civvy YF I believe. Anyone use modern filters and housings from the local auto parts store?
Looking for the following parts to finish my 1952 M38: fuel tank straps, battery cables, top bow rods, NOS 0-60 psi oil pressure sending unit with Douglas connector. NOS head light dimmer switch.

Hello DF,
I understand that the early M151-series air cleaner is very similar (if not identical) to the M38A1. So you may find this interesting.....several M151 owners have removed the wire gauze strainer from the air filter and have installed a FRAM paper element into the shell. Here's the FRAM that they use....it's a FRAM CA-8039.
Reports from users indicate some improvements in performance.

Ken,

I have two M151 air cleaner canisters. They are both the same. What is the difference between early and late M151 air cleaner assemblies? I am pretty sure that the late M38A1 and early M151 use the same air cleaner.

Hello Dave,
here are pictures of the two versions of the air cleaner. The "flat-top" is the early version, used 1960-62. The "ribbed" version followed on and was used to 1982 final production.

The early cleaner had another slight difference. Because the carb used on early M151's (the Holley) was vented externally, it had a connection to the air filter for fording purposes. The ribbed cleaner used the Zenith carb and that carb was internally vented so an extra connection point was not used. A pipe plug filled the connection outlet.

I guess I was wrong. The early M151 and M38A1 air filters are not the same. The two I have are late M151. Thanks for the pictures and education.

Just purchased a 1952 m38a1... I have the same question but didn't understand a final answer to the original question. Will that Fram filter ( ca 8039 ) work as a replacement for the oil bath filter? thanks

That particular Fram will work in the M151 air filter. There is another one that would work in the M38A1 filter. I'll do a search and get back to you.

Those web references are for the MB and M38 filter which do not believe have the same interior dimensions of the Willys/Kaiser supplied M38A1/M170.

Why replace something that is known to work and requires little attention?

I found an M38A1 oil bath for a fair price so I purchased it. I'll be using the original filter.

I had the same question in August on this thread, I followd the thread thinking Dave would have the eventual answer... I again 2nd Georges question... Anybody know of paper filter that will work in an M38a1. Joel; I've always had a slight "Mickey Mouse" streak in me.. If it's a good fit it would sure be easier to change and is internal and not seen. :idea: :?:
