Rubber windshield problems

Post by Tech3140 » Thu Feb 17, 2022 7:47 pm

So I just bought an A2. Need work, last serviced in 2011.

All clean, windshield down, and now, I can’t get it seated to put the pins. What am I doing wrong? I don’t want to force it and crack the windshield.

This happened before. I bought a new windshield rubber, it fits on the windshield frame and fits between the dash and windshield.

I just can’t remember how to fix this.

Anyone got an idea ???

Ratchet straps from the top of the windshield down to the back of the mutt and slowly, preferably over a few days, keep pulling it down till the pins will go in. Do not be in a hurry.

Good idea. But after that, what’s next?
If I want to lower the windshield, like almost every day, will I still have to use this technique every time I want to pu up my windshield ???

Not usually but you have to remember that these windshields were not designed to be raised and lowered on a daily basis. It was mostly for transport only. So seldom done and if it broke putting it up, oh well, motor pool will fix it. Once you get it up I would leave it there for a couple weeks to settle in the gasket and when you put it down be sure to put it back up in a reasonable time. You will get a feel for it after a while. But I think I can say that if you are going to be doing that do not expect that seal to hold out water for too long. And to the best of my knowledge nobody is making replacements so when the supply runs out they are gone for good.

Go to a craft store or Harbor Freight (I bought one at a Lidl) and buy a heat gun....(looks like the Wifes hair dryer)
Apply hot air to the rubber, put windshield up, apply some more heat until the pins can go in and out with a minor tug on the top of the windshield, leave windshield up for an hour to cool, repeat as needed, or use a grinder disc to remove excessive rubber.
Should be zero issue with raising and lowering your windshield daily, just remember to strap it to the hood to prevent breakage, and that the LEO will likely ticket you if you're on the street and you're not wearing a set of goggles.
82nd Airborne and 101 + other units drove with windshields down all the time, you can't fire through the glass, and it can reflect the Sun to the enemy giving away your location.
I even cover my headlamps with Burlap sandbags under the door (headlight retainer ring) per 82nd SOP.

And that’s the info I’m looking for.
Thank you.
I have a heat gun, angle grinder and time.

I’ll give it a shot.

what I actully did was removed the seal all togther when I was doing what you stated. Having the ablity to lower and raise the windsheild. It works fine if your ok with the windsheild moving around a little. The pins keep it in place. These beast are not aerodynmic so do wht you need. I also just trimed down the seal as well. Its was not easy but I did with a jigsaw. Until I placed a top on mine I replaced with a new seal and as Ricks stated its not easy to put in place for pin alignment.
