It was a Hi-Rail conversion used for maintenance work on the railroads inside the bases. I don't think it was real popular since rail speeders were abundant and much better suited for use on the rails. You notice that the suspension has to be welded to prevent it from moving, if it did the wheels would come off the track.

Good Morning Everyone:

I wonder why they took out all of the lights? You would think off hand that you would want something for safety?

Any ideas?

Regards,

Walter

It does not even have seats in it from the looks of it. I am guessing that considering the location this was a field expedient type of deal. They found this thing and it ran and it would fit the rails with minimum modifications. All of the externals had probably already been scavenged for other vehicles. Weld up some wheels from a rail cart and weld up the suspension where it needs to be and you are done. Probably for free overall cost. "Lights? We don't need no steenkin' lights".

I did some searching and here is the original pic of this. Appears to be from Fort Chaffe, Arkansas.

Lights were probably removed when it was in the Cannibalization Point, and stripped form useful part by other mechanics. Then some guy suggested they build a runabout for rail use and just made use of old wheels and welded the turning points.
They would not be on an active railway, the posts are all controlled by the Transportaion Branch Rail Engineers. Likely never see commercial trains entering a post, the posts assets take over from a siding where the cars are dropped/exchanged.

well its to bad they welded the suspension to keep it from moving. You want it to move to keep you from derailing. If it can move it will always be on the track. I have a 8 person gang inspection car. It has no suspension and it will derail. If you want to know more about this hobby google Narcoa Rail

A leaf spring suspension will go straight up and down and could be left alone since the solid axle locates the wheels but independent suspension travels in and out as the suspension arms go through the arc of motion and that would cause binding and derail.

Set up properly it won't derail. The suspension won't travel on the rail like it travels on the road. While your on the rail you won't go through and deep holes. On my 8 passenger gang car , the car moves right to left and up and down. When I go over a Frog I always walk the car over it. If I dont it will derail. The car I'm building now has full suspension and will not derail. The suspension only needs to travel 3 to 6 inches if that to keep it from derailing. Do you have experience with rail equipment?

I have a little experience with it, A friend of mine is an engineer on the 611 steamer and he has a LOT of experience. Here is one I picked up a while ago. It eventually went to him.

You showing me a rail inspection car doesn't tell me or show me you have experience. When I asked if you ever been on NARCOA Rail site, you said you would check it out. Almost everyone I know that runs the rail knows of or has heard of NARCOA. I belong to the club. The only thing on that jeep that causes a problem would have been the steering not the suspension. Look if you belong to a Rail club cool , If not why give out bad info?
Here is my first one. The one I'm working on now has independent airbag suspension and yes this one derails if you aren't careful.

Not exactly the most congenial person are you? Yes, I went to the site, I looked at the slide show and it is an interesting site. I would certainly hope most of the people that belong there are more open than you are. I am more interested in mainline rail stuff. As far as my experience? I do not nor did I ever work for the railroad. I did volunteer on a couple of small lines for a few years when I was living in places where it was possible to do so. I am not an expert but I know enough to get me by. But I am not here to get into a pissing match so I am not going to say anymore.
Have a good day sir.
