GPW 207861

Post by Mark Warner » Wed Jun 06, 2007 8:14 pm

I brought GPW 207861, matching engine and frame, home tonight. Image

Included extra transmission and radiator, original canvas winter top (canvas shot, frames good), top bows, lots of f-marked parts including pintle, driver and rear seat frames, original hand crank behind rear seat. Zero rust through anywhere, including the typical spots such as the internal gussets in the front seat wells, floor hat channels and the windshield skin. No stress cracks in the swing-up headlight brackets.

Significant missing items: four grab handles, front top bow brackets, front bumper and filler. Gussets appear to be complete and salvageable.

More to follow after I get into it.

Mark, That is a NICE GPW!!! I know that vehicles from that area tend to be very rust free!! I was following the auction and was impressed with the jeep. Congrats on your purchase. Jon S.

Hello Mark,

Very nice jeep, that's how we like to find them !!
I was looking at it too, but still have a GP and GPW on its way and the shed gets full :)

Have fun with it, Luc

Thanks, guys. It was a bunch of money, but it is an exceptional jeep. Being local to it, and having the opportunity to inspect it carefully, made all the difference.

Total missing original parts--one front top bow bracket, two top bow "slides" horn, one transfer case knob, jerry can bracket, front bumper and wood filler, engine head (block is matching), fuel tank. Front frame horns intact, front bumper gussets probably restorable (reinforcements added), universal rifle carrier brackets removed.

F marked parts everywhere, from bumperettes to seat frames to spare tire mount.

I saw that one, and I was wondering, what was the deal with the exhaust?

That's a typical mod in dry-land wheat country for field vehicles from pickups to large trucks, to keep the hot exhaust pipe out of the dry grass. In this case, it was pretty well done, in that the blackout light mount pad and the opening are not modified. Only the header pipe was cut up and rewelded to make the trip through the grill. Looks scary as he11 from a distance.

The ebay listing says 1942 GPW-Ford- Military jeep. Is this possible with a number as high as GPW 207861?
My GPW is 87217 and it was made in December 1942.

Ad was wrong, corrected later in the copy. It's a '44, late June/early July near as I can figure.

Dates vs. Serial Numbers

Post by David H. Morganthall » Fri Jul 13, 2007 9:02 pm

I have 82264 and would like to find one close to it to find its approximate DOD.

I also have my MATCHING 1945 with serial number 271088 with data plate date of June 12, 1945, confirmed all numbers are legitimate myself, before and after purchase. This one NEVER made it to the ship to go to Japan and was spared being dumped with its cousins off million dollar point in the Pacific.

Tom who hostes www.1945GPW.com has serial number 271071 which was built the same day as mine. His lost its engine before he bought it. But it does confirm from another source that my plates are accurate.
