GPW 51368 1942 Restoration in Iceland

Post by Viking27 » Sat Apr 14, 2007 2:03 pm

Hello everyone,

This jeep is without a doubt the most original WWII Jeep left in Iceland. A bit of history to start with:

Iceland has long and wet winters. Almost all cities and towns are on the coast, and in winter the roads are keep free of ice by spraying them with rock salt. This causes cars to rust quickly here. There are only 2 towns inland, where also they dont use salt on the roads. This GPW is from one of those towns.

Egilsstaðir is a small town in the east of Iceland. Its named after the largest farm there. In WWII there were lots of soilders there, like every where here. In the end of war, there was a convoy of vechicles heading out of town. Troops going home. "Luckily" the clutch broke in this Jeep on the way out. The old farmer Sveinn, from the Egilsstaðir farm approched the soilders and made an offer, which the soilders agreed to.

Included in the sale, was the Jeeps original early MBT trailer, the very one hooked up to it in war! Sveinn later repaired the clutch and used the jeep for decades on his farm. It is very likely that Jóhannes Kjarval (our most famous painter) was transported back and forth in this jeep, with his canvas and paint.....

Most jeeps here have been heavily modified to suite the cold weather, to a point restoring them is not an option, or they are just rusted to bits. This jeep is very orignal, with lots of "F" script parts, and the original tub. The original paint is showing under the newer paint, here and there.

Dashboard. Any idea what that button in the red circle is? Could this be a "bubbafied" horn button?

This jeep is in an old mans collection:

He is sick and cant do the restoration of this or any other of his 200 cars. We both agree this jeep must be kept in Iceland, but many tourists have been trying to buy it off him. He also wants the restoration of this Jeep to be done 100% similar to my BSA M20 motorbike, so ever since I showed him my bike, we have been talking about the possibilities of me getting this jeep from him.

Here is a link to photos of the restoration of my BSA. Sorry, but text is in Icelandic...haha:

Hinrik,
Most likely you will find the original hood numbers on that jeep and trailer numbers too... What a find......

When you get it home, please let us know what you find.

ahhhh....

I did not think about that...yes, the paint is good on it, and as you can see on this photo the newer paint is peeling off, exposing the original paint:

Rear view. Slightly modified. Also note the lack of right hand tool box. I dont know why this is like this.

:D Hi Hinrick,
Thank you for sharing a real cool find. Also I checked out your BSA, what beautiful work you have done, congratulations! Stay in touch with the gentleman who owns it. I have been so close to getting a similar jeep before but failed to stay in touch. Then I learned my lesson and a friend gave me one (an M151A2).

aloha,

Olav

Hi Hinrik,

Nice GPW,as for the button in the red circle, to me it looks like a starter button. If you look at that photo again, under the temp gauge on the floor
is the hole where the starter switch is supposed to go.
I would guess that when the original one failed, someone just put a starter button in the dash, easier to work on and fit.

Cheers Gary

Gary,

Yes, that is a good guess, but there is a starter button fitted on the left hand side, next to the FE bracket....another mod....
