How Many Jeeps are Being Restored and Worked On ?

Post by 70th Division » Mon Aug 29, 2022 11:00 am

Hello,

I was wondering how many other G members are restoring and working on their jeeps currently ?

It would be nice to get an idea of how many jeeps are completed in a given year, knowing that it takes a couple of years usually to start and finish a jeep, at a minimum ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ !

If you are working on one, please post a picture or two here.

We all like pictures !!

I am currently restoring a 1943 GPW and a 1945 Willys MB.

It is a Great Crusade, to quote Eisenhower, to save our WW2 Vehicles !!

Keep 'em Rolling !!

Best Regards,

Ray

Hi Ray:

Here is the current state of my 1942 GPW restoration. Started it two years ago and finally have a rolling frame. Slow and steady wins the race :D

That is looking great Adam !!!
We are about at the same position with our GPW projects.
Slow and steady is the key, just keep moving forward ๐Ÿ˜ !
I just got to a rolling frame, and I also been working for at least 2 years plus on the project .
It is really nice to be bolting parts back on the jeep, that have been off for so long ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜ !!

Keep up your good works !!

Best Regards,
Ray

I'm trying to do two at once; my long-time first WWII jeep, GPW-37718, and GPW-24953 that I originallly acquired for parts, but now am resurecting. I'm doing the two script GPW's at the same time because I spent too much time on researching stuff, espeically hardware sizes and lengths, on my previous builds and only want to look stuff up once this time. I just finished the frames and springs and am starting on the differentials now. So far, it's been pretty practical. I put away all the tools I needed for working on the frames, then did the springs, and now have all the delicate instruments out for setting up the gear sets. After I have two rolling chassis I'll switch to rebuilding the transmissions and transfer cases, then the steering, and then the engines. After that the shop should have some room due to the condensation of projects and I can start on the bodywork. That's going to be a real chore, as they're in very poor condition by any standards. No pictures right now, but maybe later.

Hello,

Iโ€™m (very slowly) building up a 1944 GPW Ambulance replica out of leftovers and parts discarded by my other collector friends here in Australia.

Also have the bones of an incomplete Willys MB stashed away for a rainy day

Cheers

Hello Phill,

That is great to know and sounds like a nice project !!
As they say, parts are parts, and pretty soon with enough old parts you can build a complete jeep !!
I am doing that right now with my 1943 GPW, assembled from other parts I have collected, back into a complete GPW :D :D :D !

Also making daily progress !!

Same to you !!!

Now if we can inspire others here on the G to get started, or keep working, they will learn how much fun it is, along with great satisfaction.

The best thing is, today, there have never been more high quality new parts available for our jeeps than right now !!!

With more and more parts becoming available, there really is no excuse to get bogged down due to lack of key parts.
Also, they have never been more affordable and abundant !

This really is going to be a new Golden Age for WW2 Jeeps, even junkers can be restored these days :D :D
Jeeps that others declared junk, can be brought back now with all the parts, and future parts being made by JMP and Seal Tested.

Give Ron a call, look at his website and see all the great parts available !!

Lets get some more Jeep restorations going !!

Best Regards,
Ray

I do one every two years; just finished a WC63 this year, so when the snow melts in March, I will start on my 44 MB, and also I have two M38s on hand, to build.
However, I see that there are no more WW2 jeep candidates to be restored, unless they are already in the hands of the restorer, so I think that part of the hobby is dying.
That is why guys are even buying M38A1s, which have been ignored.
That is the view from here anyway. Maybe other places are still full of WW2 jeeps yet to be restored, but I don't see any. I have not seen a WW2 jeep for sale on G503 for a Long time now......
Yes, we now have the bodies and parts to restore junkers these days; show me the junkers out there. I saw a GPW frame on eBay yesterday for $6000; that ain't going to happen.

Hello,

That is great getting these vehicles restored and saved !!

There are still many out there, just likely in other areas.

Most are showing up an Facebook marketplace, but I don't do FB, but anyone can look on it to see what is there.
Also try Search Tempest, that aggregates Craigslist posting around the country.
Sometimes ebay as well.

M38A1 jeeps are awesome, plentiful, and cheap !!
I am glad more are being recovered and restored, I have 2, 1 being a recent purchase here in Florida that was actually a Dutch built one that ended up over here.
It needs a total restoration, but these jeeps are just unbelievable and very comfortable as well.

My 90 year old neighbor drove over here on the weekend and saw the M38A1s, and he was very happy to see them,
as he drove a 1952 M38A1 model in the Army.

He also owned one after he was out of the Army.
He later sold in in 1970 for $4000 !!

Keep ' em Rolling !!

Ray

I don't have FB. You are saying that all restorable WW2 jeeps are only there?

Hello,

No, not at all, but the most seem to be there now.

It is a huge marketplace, and has many military vehicles posted there.

Once it was ebay, and Craigslist, but now the FB Marketplace has most of everything listed along these lines of military project vehicles.

You don't have to be on FB to see the ads. But you may need someone or make an account to contact the sellers.

https://m.facebook.com/marketplace/item ... 112l%22%7D
Resized_Screenshot_20221116-094130_Chrome.jpeg
For example, I typed in Iowa City, Iowa, and this showed up, but in Lee's Summit, MO.
I typed in military jeep, and found a GPW project, and the seller has an M-37 as well. The GPW has a title it says, now just get the right price on it and someone will be restoring a Ford, and Ron gets more parts orders ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ !!

This jeep actually looks like it has great potential !

Many people use the easiest forum to sell items in their yards and bushes ๐Ÿ˜

Here is a 1937 German BMW staff Car ??

https://m.facebook.com/marketplace/item ... 728124964/

Just as an example :
The more Jeeps we find and get people restoring, the more parts sold by Ron, and more secure is the WW2 Jeep World !!
Ron has the parts we need, so no reason not to start and save another jeep.

Just keep looking, they are out there !!

There are plenty of jeeps out there, trucks, Dodges, etc.

This is our History, and we are here to save it !!

Looking for them is half the fun .

Best Regards,
Ray

Jeeps for resto are still about over here - you can see several on UK ebay - you may not like the prices though !
