I just purchased a titled 1942 gpw from an estate. Build date of 12/31/1942. Vehicle is numbers matching and 99% complete and 99% rust free. The owners son doesn’t think it’s ran since the 80’s. Owner purchased in 1956 as shown on title. It’s had numerous repaints.
My question is, how can I tell if hood numbers are correct? And is there any way to see if vehicle went overseas or stayed stateside during war?
What would value of jeep be as it now or fully restored?

Re: 1942 GPW Barn Find
Hello,
Welcome to the great G503 !!!
That looks like a great jeep !!
Please post pics of the hood numbers , and some under hood pictures.
Actually the more pictures the better !!
If you can find any rebuild tags on the engine or other components
you can discover where it was rebuilt.
If you find for example a Mercedes rebuilddata plate on the engine or even on the dash where the originals were replaced, then you can be sure it served overseas
Also you might find French tags but 1956 is pretty early and I don't know how many ex-French jeeps were sold off that early, although there have been examples
found !!
You may also find US rebuild data tags on the engine that may have been set up overseas as well, or stateside.
Please post more pictures !!!
That way everyone can see the jeep and make some determinations for you.
Also,
what state are you located in ?
That might help a little as well.
Sometimes you may find an original list of a postwar government auction catalogue that get posted here on the G and can find your jeep there, usually with original hood numbers listed at time of sale.
Also ask if the family has original
pictures of the jeep from 1956, the original markings may have been still on the bumpers, front and rear.
Then you will have its actual history !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Greetings
My GPW was also built on 31 December 1942 at the Dallas Texas factory. It was sent to the army base in Witchita Falls Texas as a Follow Me Jeep. I'm the third owner.
Would like to hear more about yours.

Ray

Mine does show signs of yellow paint, but the po’s son said jeep was painted yellow for his father’s construction company. How can u tell where it was made? Same build date, I wonder how close they are? Mine is GPW-90590

G'day Jeepthing
My GPW number 90176 . Our Jeeps might have rolled off the line the same day ! When the MVPA Convention was held in Dallas a few years ago, we found the original Ford Jeep Factory was still there, mostly vacant. We got to line up our GPW's on the old assembly line for photos. Just brilliant.
