Edgewater Gpw
Hello Everyone
I don't think that the question has been asked for a while, so I thought I would ask again. Have anyone identified their gpw as having been manufactured at fords Edgewater plant ? Looking forward to your replies.
regards Nick Peters

Re: Edgewater Gpw
The Rouge plant ceased assembling jeeps in September 1942, with a brief resumption in mid-1943. Chester ceased producing jeeps in January 1943. The Edgewater branch assembled 1,333 jeeps in early 1943. The Dallas, Louisville, and Richmond plants continued assembling the quarter-ton trucks until the Ford contract ended in July 1945
personally i have no records of an Edgewater built GPW but i only have 1000 GPWs in my DB. The man to ask is Tom. He would know.

Hey Donk
Thanks for your reply. As you state Edgewater produced very few gpws. I was hoping that someone may have been doing research and found out their gpw came from that plant. I'm quite sure Tom would have posted the information if he had become aware of one. However as he is no longer welcome here on 503 that wont happen now. I could contact him and ask the question. But even if he does have that knowledge he may be loath to share it.
regards Nick

I'm sure that he'll share it at least on an individual basis, but probably also on his FB page.

How do we identify an Edgewater (where's Edgewater?) GPW70th Division wrote: ↑Wed Jan 29, 2020 4:21 pmHello Mikael,
For the record if anyone else has a 4x4 stamped on their data plate on the glove box,
those jeeps were built in Dallas, Texas at the Ford Factory located there.
GPW Jeeps that have 1/4 T stamped on their dash data plate are from the Louisville, Kentucky Ford Factory.
GPW Jeeps that have what appear to have their serial numbers stamped hard and twice, so they appear like slightly larger numbers than normal are from the Chester, Pennsylvania Ford Factory.
GPW Jeeps that have no middle " Day " date stamped on them are from the Richmond, California Ford Factory.
GPW Jeeps that have a small font used in the serial number stamping were made at the Dearborn, Michigan Ford Factory.
Hopefully this will help others who are looking for some answers

Hello Jeff,
As far as we (G503 People) know, we know nothing of an actual Edgewater GPW.
Maybe they were all sent to Russia, or China, or were sunk on the Murmansk Run.
Maybe some research into Merchant Marine cargo bills of laden on ships lost in the North Atlantic might shed some light on where these mystery jeeps are currently are located.
1,333 jeeps I imagine would fill up a few ships and be gone.
It is a great mystery, but one I hope we can discover with some detective work
Maybe ask these NJ guys !! An incredible collection, I have never heard of !!
Maybe they have some info or could find it !!

Re: Edgewater Gpw
Nice collection of early iron they have there!
I don't know how many jeeps it takes to fill a ship, but if Ford wanted to they could build that amount in a couple of days (working all three shifts) after the factory was set up. Hardly worth their time unless that lot was essentially hand-built. Interesting stuff.

Re: Edgewater Gpw
Jeff,
I've done some research into Lend-Lease shipping and from the records I've reviewed ships could load between 100 and 300 crated jeeps on a single vessel. I've looked at hundreds of Lend-Lease reports and I've never seen a ship loaded only with jeeps so it's difficult to tell how many an average ship might hold. Crated jeeps were always loaded with other vehicles and material and usually in large numbers. A ship might be loaded with 150 crates and another with 300 but they were always large round numbers. I've never seen for example, a load of 85 or 135 crates.
