I still want a picture. With all the crated jeeps in the US, you would think there would be a picture of one.
I don't think we brought many jeeps back; which is why most of the jeeps here are dated 42 and 44s and 45s are far less common. We didn't need them; the Army was a fraction of the size post war.

the grandfather must have been a very tall man, to go through the trouble of cutting the rear wheel well to extend the driver's seat.

Hello,

Outstanding, beautiful jeep !!!

Yes the USA sold jeeps, disassembled, brand new, in the crate here in the USA.
This jeep clearly was one of them.
Now some people want more evidence of crated jeeps being sold surplus.

Well here is an older post from another G member about his jeep, a crated jeep !!
He happens to have all the original paperwork , and letters, from the US Government spelling out all the surplus options, especially the crated jeep option.

viewtopic.php?f=144&t=289307&hilit=crate+jeep

Now if the original poster could repost the letters that were trashed by photobucket, that would be great !!

But the great info is there in black and white, and clear about what the deals are.
All original paperwork !!!!! Take a look !!!!

:D :D :D :D :D
Best Regards,
Ray

Ray
I don't think anyone is doubting the fact that crated/boxed surplus jeeps became available at the end of ww2. However if you take time to read and study the original post here. Then I think ,you too will want to see the answers to the questions put to the original poster. Regarding his very exact statements.
regards Nick

That description on page 5 of the pdf (or page numbered #2) does not leave any doubt :

I like to talk to people about my jeep as a topic of conversation. When meeting this new individual a related issue came up in talking to my girlfriend's mothers sisters husband that I met last week. He is 80 and remembers the history of a jeep... GPW that was bought crated by Jerry's relative, who was a veteran, late in 1945 and shipped to him. Jerry ( who was like 6 at that time) remembers it being in a crate and that it cost $500. He loved that jeep himself and managed to buy it from his relative when he turned 16 and drove it until he joined the Army himself in 1959. He sold it anticipating he would be shipped overseas but was stateside his whole tour. He lost track of that jeep and bought a new CJ7 jeep in 1975, which he still has.

I asked if he knew of any photos of the jeep in the crate and he told me he remembers none... kind of looked at me weird until I explained this thread. He does not use a computer or smart phone and it was like talking Greek to him!

Bottom line, when these Jeeps were in crates taking a photo to document that for posterity rarely (if ever) crossed any ones mind.

Don’t think camera’s were a very common thing to privately own those days.

Chevy43 posted pictures of parts of the crate that came with his ‘45 MB.. but that is probably 15 years ago.

Found topic w/o pics though:

I live about 10 miles from the old Benicia arsenal.I had a close family friend who bought a jeep after the war there. He said they assembled for you so I assume it was broken down for overseas shipment ie. crated. The Richmond plant is about 10 miles away. He was a veteran and they got preference in buying them. He kept it for awhile but his new bride didn't like the smell of the canvas seats so he traded it in for an Oldsmobile.

Is that a reproduction photo of a crated jeep?

I don't think I saw anything in the list of parts or the crating instructions on a jerry can being included?
