Re: GPW 197412 D O D 4-19-44
Last week I was able to trade for an original MB front bumper from my friend that as sold his jeep and shipped it off to England last year. I currently has a cj bumper on my frame. Last year I made a couple of copies of it, but now I will restore the original. It will not be easy. So far I has a lot of original parts. I want the old used look, of my motor pool restoration.

Re: GPW 197412 D O D 4-19-44
I'm going to back up and start from the beginning of my GPW. I started out with an early MB body. Mounted it on a 43 GPW frame. This was my base start. Along the way I have made many other friends that have built or are building there jeep. For me it has been the best source of parts.
I'm going to start out with my Tub. I cut it apart and save every panel I could. Sorry to say i did not take many pictures. These pictures are the work and priming of the tub. I used surface build up primmer, then red oxide primmer, and the OD green from Ron's.

Hello,
That is a great tub restoration you did !
It looks great , and I commend you for saving the original tub and restoring it
I now figured out that you have 2 jeeps here that you are or have been working on
that is awesome, and great you have your workshop built as well.
Here is some technical info for the G members working on later 1943 GPW jeeps :
I have a late 1943 GPW, that has a "late" made ACM 1 body on it.
I think the serial number on mine is in the 157,xxx range.
I didn't realize that after all the Ford made bodies used by Ford until late 1943, they started
using the early Willys type 1 ACM bodies at their factories, until they switched to the ACM type 2 bodies. The way I dated it was with the high numbered ACM 1 serial number on the body.
I had thought that it was a GPW with a Willys ACM body placed on it by the British.
Now I know that is was 100 percent factory correct.
It is titled as a 1942 Willys, and has a 1942 Willys serial number range, but is actually a 1943 Ford GPW . Even the British archives lists it
as a Willys MB, but it is in fact a Ford GPW. The ACM Type 1 body has Ford foot rests installed in it, the jeep has a Ford frame, and a Ford replacement engine that the British put in it .
Now I have to get that corrected with the Florida DMV, that should be a fun task
Keep us posted on your beautiful Jeep project.
Here is a link to dataplates4u ACM body numbers that other looking at your post may find very helpful in their restorations especially if they find an ACM type 1 body on their 1943 Ford .

Here is a very interesting chart from the cj2a page that has the Ford use of ACM 1 bodies in late 1943

Thanks, Ray for the info.
Your right, I have two jeeps. By the time I got the second tub and matching frame I had completed the first tub and painted it. So most of my parts are ford, I'm going to use the 1944 GPW vin number. I cut off the cowl gussets and still need to fit the to the first body.

Re: GPW 197412 D O D 4-19-44
After I painted the tub, I started on rebuilding all of the parts attached to the tub.
My GPW was a suppression jeep. One of the first parts I repaired was the battery conduit box for the radio connection. The bottom was rusted out. So I cut off about one third of the bottom and replaced it. Sand blasted it primmer, painted, and remounted it. Also took carriage bolts and squared the corners to look like the originals.

Hello,
That is a beautiful bumper discovery !!
It actually looks like it is a propeller with wings from an Army Air Force unit
Not the dash next to it as well.
Here is a link to a Beautiful slat grill jeep with the same marking !!
viewtopic.php?f=69&t=235482&hilit=wendover+slat+grill
Maybe the new owner of the jeep that it came off of, would like to know it was
originally an Army Air Force Jeep
You are going to have a beautiful Jeep !!!!!!!
Excellent work you are doing !!!
You may be able to carefully uncover some unit identifier letters to the left of the propeller
I think that the radio box had regular type bolt heads not squared off ones.
But I am willing to learn if you have knowledge that they were squared off !!
Mine are all missing anyways on my GPW jeep with that type of radiobox.
Keep up your great restoration works !!!
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: GPW 197412 D O D 4-19-44
Been some time since last post. I have been purchasing a lot of parts to start the mechanical part of my jeep.
I have posted pictures of my recent purchase of a friend's father in law that had sold his GPW a couple years ago. I had asked him if he had any parts remaining. This is what he had. Transfer case, carb, and a pile of bolts. Most are F marked. He also had the bracket to hold the speedometer. Mine was missing.

Re: GPW 197412 D O D 4-19-44
I have been buying a lot of parts in the resent days for the winter rebuilt. My goal is to have it on the road by spring. I rolled it out of the shop to turn it around. I took these pictures last night.
Last night I dissembled the fuel strainer for the first time. I was pleasantly surprised of the good condition I found inside.

Re: GPW 197412 D O D 4-19-44
Started the dissembling the jeep last night. First I removed the front fenders and grill. Before I remove the tub, I need to weld the correct front fire wall gussets on.
I blasted and painted the gussets before I welded them on. I had some new lower hat channels bent up and power coated at work.
Test fit is good. Tonight I will cut some red oak with my table saw to install in the hat channels.
