Collected this today, not a complete Jeep as such.... No body but the frame is in excellent condition except for the usual scrap metal on the front and rear X member and the Bubba front bumper bar. Came with the original centre Data plate along with the Australian Army census plate, 2 really nice Combat rims and lots of bolt on engine bits and lots of little items.

No body tub and getting something 1/2 decent out here where I live is near impossible so I will be getting a repro kit but I will work with my metal guy to make this better than what they are and I have a plan & the skill level to do "something" with the paint so watch this space.

This Jeep was delivered to the Army exactly 1 year & 3 days after my 42MB viewtopic.php?f=127&t=172207
so this will live again.

Hi John,

What a nice start!

Any chance of some photo's of the front of the battery tray where the tinning is please for the negative cable?

Also, if you've a chance to photo the back part of the rear chassis rail gussets (the angle fronted boxed section just above the rear spring hanger), that'd be great too. It will either be squared off, or have a semicircular cut out.

Thanks and enjoy the build again!

I checked my records and that posted by YLG80 recently, but it hasn't yielded an ARN yet. That said, John Edwards is about again on facebook mostly, if you wanted to try him for info on it.

@ Ian, I will check the battery tray and see if any tinning remains, the rear X member is a little bit of a mess and I won't be taking tools to any part of this until Xmas and will have a good look then, also check your PM's, I don't do Facebook so I would appreciate it you could keep looking for the ARN.

@ Phil, 1 Aussie trailer wheel, I Suzuki, 2 X Combat rims.

Time for an update.

I started by removing the scrap metal and equally scrap heavy front bumper, I used 13 5 inch discs and a 5 grinding discs removing the rubbish off the front in an attempt to save the gussets and frame horns all to no avail, sandwich rust and twists had taken its toll, as I have decided to do as much as possible on this I replaced the frame horns,

This may not seem a big deal but my total welding experience was about 15 minutes with an Arc welder about 20 years back so I got myself a Mig and cracked on. The first photo shows the drivers side frame horn removed and a close you can see a strip of metal that was welded on during service so I decided to use this for my benefit so I ground the old chassis off down to to this and started measuring.

It all turned out great, the bumper bolts drop straight through top & bottom and everything is square & aligned, I had a guy check my welds and he said they were great, seems I have an aptitude for welding.

Still gathering parts and slowly getting it all together, and a thank you to Ian Fawbert who located its ARN from when it was in Aussie service, next job us to replace the rotten Battery tray and start thinking on what I can do to make the Repro' body a little better.

Time for a little update.

Work has be slowly moving forward, As mentioned I had no Body with this and the reproduction tubs have their problems, I mentioned that I was going to improve on this and one area on a repro' tub that stands out is the Axe / Shovel are is no where deep enough especially towards the front, so earlier this year I purchased a JMP front 1/4 panel and I proceeded to hack the MDJ one off. It took a bit of tweaking and hammering but I got it to work.

The next job on this long term project, is the big weak area is the transmission hump, which I will start on in the next month or so.

After I hacked off the MDJ panel,

JMP Panel fitted good after I tweaked the MDJ Tub

Thank you everyone, Ray I like your work as well and this project is similar to yours as I am building this around the frame and Data Plates.

Next Job when is warms up a little, Tub off, measure a lot then tackle the transmission hump, looks like the center hat channel is in the wrong place as well.

Hello John,

This is a great save of a jeep you are doing, and I always look forward to your updates.
Yes a very similar project, and it feels good knowing that we are bringing back jeeps that started as a pile of random parts !!!

The world is a better place with more WW2 jeeps in it :D :D :D

It is a great thing that you the Australian Army history with the data plate, outstanding !!

Keep up your good works ,

You will be able to find all the missing parts along the way.
Thank goodness Joe's Motor Pool is now making first class replacement parts for our jeeps !!

Keep 'em Rolling !!

Best Regards,
Ray
