I believe you're right. I thought I'd seen them with a bolt throught the top 1/3 of the cover. Sorry.

It's been a while since I posted on here so here's year from Dorset..
I spent a lot of time kitting the jeep out in it's British Signals jeep guise and have fitted a WS19 set and associated clutter and fabricated British antenna mount!

Nice radio set.
This is a cool antenna support? Is that standard? Where is it sold?
It’s much more discrete and lighter than the French style support+heavy MP50 bracket.
If I could find yours I would definitely use it instead for the french on I was just ready to attached to the back of my jeep.
Thank you.

Hello OzH,
It is great you are back on the G !
The improvements look outstanding !
I have a question, since you were in Signals, can you use the radio to talk with other radio operators around your area ?
Would it cause interference, or other such issues.
I have always wanted to get a radio set here in the US , that could be used to speak to another jeep.
Keep up your posting, as we all love updates to great Jeep projects
Best Regards,
Ray

Hi Yves, I agree, I had the heavy duty US/French antenna bracket on, only actually used it as a flag pole with no radio fit! You can see it in the photo's on the rear right of the jeep, I've removed it since the photo's were takenThis is a cool antenna support? Is that standard? Where is it sold?
I've been looking for a genuine bracket for a few years now, but no joy so had to fabricate this one myself. It wasn't too difficult, three folds and some welding. The base is "Arial base No8" that I bought from Sentimental Journey - https://www.sentimentaljourney.co.uk/sj ... aerial-No8
Hi Ray, my radio fit is just for dress up, the WS19 set is non-functional, no power and very few components in the boxI have a question, since you were in Signals, can you use the radio to talk with other radio operators around your area ?

I think its legal to run the A set in the UK but not the B set (my WS19 only has A fitted anyway) but not 100% sure what the rules are to be honest. There are few amateur radio sites in the UK that could answer that, one day in the future maybe?
I have not idea what the rules are in the US though? perhaps some sort of CB radio could be boxed in the military shell? Would be a cool project!

Hello OzH,
Thanks for the update
I am guessing that here the CB radio fit into a radio case would be quite useful, especially when traveling in areas with no cell signals.
I will look into that someday once the jeeps are completed.
My 42 GPW has holes in the wheel well, and on side of the jeep where I think a radio was once mounted.
My M38A1 was a radio jeep and I will locate the correct one to bolt back on.
Keep up your great work with your jeep, and please post more jeep pics when you can, and when you go on adventures with it.
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: MB212720 W-20306183
Hello OzH,
I was in France several years back with my Father and other WW2 70th Division Vets, and the French Jeep guys had some military radios set up and a local radio club. They were transmitting on the radios between the jeeps. I thought that was pretty nice !!
One GI, reenacted a radio call in for an artillery barage into Saarbrucken, Germany. He called in the original, as he discovered about 600 troops mustering in the city for a last defense.
The artillery was heavy, and all resistance was gone before they crossed the Saar River, and captured what was left of the city.
It was already heavily damaged by bombing earlier in the war.
Best Regards,
Ray

@0zH,
Thanks for the antenna mount information. I’m going to make it myself.
Regarding the use of these radios, I’ve resolved to issue for the reenactors by adding a micro mp3 reader inside.
This is a reversible mod and it plays radio chats in loop from an SD card.
https://youtu.be/fP0Q0Wc9-MU
My little 4 yo granddaughter loves to switch the BC-1000 on and listen to the chats.
She says that she is talking with the doctor .
I’ve modified different radio sets like that with cheap 5€ mp3 player circuits.
I have a BC-611 on the back seat of my jeep. If you pull the antenna it plays radio chats .
It’s difficult to pull the antenna with one hand : https://youtu.be/RtAeDIYBbj0
I have described in details these rather simple mods in G503 forum, radio section.
In the past, I’ve modified an SCR-300 for a friend by installing a CB radio in the battery box and making the connections with the antenna, buttons and handset. A much more complex mod.

Nice to see more proof of MB's using castle nuts on the spring pivot bolts, where as it seems from data (similar to posts like these) that GPW's used slotted nuts.
Good work on the rebuild mate. Looks good.
Cheers,
Ian.

Yesterday, I have bought two antenna mounts in the giant Militaria Fair in Ciney.
One is for the Soviet Koulikov antennas (thanks to Radtech for the info) and the other looked similar to the one you have built yourself.
It's made in aluminum and has a number stamped on it. Don't know the origin.
As it more discrete, I am going to check if it would fit for my jeep
Today, I have attached the antenna base BX-33A on my jeep using that discrete bracket
I still have to paint the bracket et make a good grounding.

Well done on a beautiful restoration job. I love the paint you used and how it takes up the oil stains that make it look so original - is it completely Matt - no sheen at all? Wonder if it's the same stuff as "Matt 1" that used to be considered the best available in the UK?

It's a Semi-Matt paint.bowman wrote: ↑Sun Nov 07, 2021 2:09 amWell done on a beautiful restoration job. The brand is Sympacolor and its' written on the cover: Kaki Semi Matt 1944
The Sympacolor "US Semi Matt OD 1942" is much more yellow.
After the restoration, I was used to leave the jeep in the sun to try to age the colors.
And indeed the colors became more brownish.
In the meantime I have also sprayed the antenna support using the same Semi Matt 1944. But it will also need some color aging !

The wows of jeep ownership..
So, last summer, I was happily driving around in during the British summer enjoying my jeep.. when.. I completely lost oil pressure and lost power. Luckily, I was with buddy who is a hot rod owner who had a trailer so we managed to get my jeep home without too much bother
I carried out a few different vacuum/pressure checks that all suggested I had a problem with my piston rings in cylinder 3 so I pulled the engine
dropped the pistons and found this..!

Re: MB212720 W-20306183
So, I have a Willys jeep and this engine was GPW. I had a Willys block ready for a “future project” along with a Willys head plus parts I had been collecting for a more correct engine for my jeep
Willy head
Old but restorable oil filter
NOS engine plate
NOS oil pump came from India
The block and head have been in a machine shop being brought back to life..
More to come..
