I might suggest confirming that the block deck was not distorted by the repair.
BTW what did the crack repair cost?
Fair point to consider. How could distortion have happened, though? There was no heat used and the pin heads pop off at a relatively low torque level, by design. Just trying to understand since this is my first experience with an engine repair/rebuild 8)

And total cost, after I broke one of the specialized tapping bits, was around $300.

Where did you get your lock n' stitch kit? I've got small (2" - 3" if my memory is right) crack that I need to repair.

Thanks

Check out http://www.locknstitch.com/index.html By far some of the friendliest people I've worked with in the past. If you give them a call they will be able to help match you up with exactly what you will need to repair your crack.

Sean, You might already hate me and perhaps even more after this remark but here goes :|
Nah, I’m just happy people follow my thread and provide feedback 8) in regard to the pins, though, what you see is actually the second set of pins that were installed. I first installed a full row then ground those down and installed the second row in between the first set. As you’ve pointed out, the problem with this block is the “V” groove. A previous owner ground the block down over the crack and used some sort of adhesive to seal it. Surprisingly, that fix worked for quite a few years with the most recent owner (before me) never suspecting the issue until it finally started to leak again. My concern during the fix has been the thickness of the block where the groove is, though. I did install pins through the entire crack, and followed the instructions to determine how to install them, so hopefully (fingers crossed) I can seal it up tight for a pressure test and not see bubbles from the pins! I’ll definitely try your method for the pressure test and will certainly check the deck to make sure things aren’t warped. The block is already apart, as I originally planned a full rebuild, so if the leak is sealed I can always take to a machine shop if need be. Thanks for the feedback, Luc!

It's been several months since my last update so I thought I would share a few more pictures of my spring/summer jeep activities. Unfortunately I haven't touched the GPW since 4th of July...been way too busy and my free time and decent weather don't seem to align! Oh well, at least she looks pretty sitting in the garage every time I leave and get home from work

First, a few additional pictures of what my jeep looked like before I started the resto in August 2013. Definitely a tired-looking old gal! Hard to believe that was 5 years ago already, too

Image

Image

This was taken at the Aberdeen, MD swap meet this past May. I unfortunately showed up on Saturday morning and apparently missed the busiest day, which is Friday. I'll be back next year, though, especially since I live right down the road!

Image

Then there was dodging thunderstorms later that evening

Image

Next was WWII Weekend in Reading, PA during the first weekend of June. As always, a great show! Especially when you have the jeep as your front row seat to the air show. It's also always great to meet other MV owners, though I'm always shocked at how many aren't on the 'G'. Although, the common theme for most was that the 'G' is too hostile and people are too critical. I thought that was a fairly accurate description, actually (and unfortunately)

Image

Image

Image

And finally, this was after I got home from WWII Weekend. I ended up driving from my house in MD to the show, then to my parents house between each day. Did 400 care free miles that weekend, even driving home one night in severe thunderstorms. The jeep performed flawlessly :P

Image

Well that's it for now. Maybe I'll have some engine updates later this fall. At this point I don't seem to have another free weekend until mid-October. I'm hoping by then I'll be able to pressure test my crack fix, and if successful, reassemble the engine in time to potentially install it before winter sets in. Not holding my breath all of that will get done by then, though...

Wow, 400 miles. That's great. I look forward to those days soon as well. perhaps there will be a few events 1/2 between one another. Thanks for posting the contrast. I'll have a 42 GPW to start in on next summer I hope.

Thanks guys! The long trip certainly made me a bit nervous - especially during the show when the weather reached into the 90s with +90% humidity. Long story shot, quite a few other jeeps and MVs experienced vapor look due to the weather, which caused lots of frustrated/stressed reenactors. I was lucky, though, and my jeep (after a small carb adjustment) ran like a top the entire weekend. My confidence and trust in the old girl definitely went up after that weekend

It took me a few hundred miles on the WLA after the engine rebuild before I gained confidence in the reliability of the machine. I know what you mean. I am hearing a lot about vapor lock with various MVs lately, Jeeps, Scout Cars, Dodges. I'll spend a bit of time researching that topic and see what to do as a precaution. I recall the higher octane fuels have something to do with it, but am not really sure. Hate to add extra shielding that is not per original design, but if it prevents parade-horror, it makes sense to do a few extra things.

Don't get me wrong, I do still get a little nervous every time I take my jeep out solely because it's 75 years old, but definitely feel like I can cruise longer and further without worrying about making it home :D

In regard to vapor lock, I've fortunately never experienced it with my jeep. My fuel system is setup to original spec, too, and my line runs across the front of the block to the mechanical fuel pump. Having kept the jeep in PA and now in MD, we experience plenty of +90 degree and +90% humidity days during the summer - both with would make me an ideal candidate for vapor lock. I'd like to keep my system as original as possible, so I'm going to knock on wood it keeps working as it has been so that I don't need to mess with any changes.

Perhaps your choice of fuel has helped. Different fuel vendors have different additives/formulations. Non-ethanol has become available again in recent years.

Perhaps...although the last two years I've mainly gotten my gas from the save bulk of gas stations. I'd like to think it's more luck, which will also keep me lucky enough from have any other major issues with my jeep
