Hi Tom

I'll PM you about hood numbers. I'm pretty sure this is the original hood. I did a little sanding, enough to find some blue numbers starting 20... under the red paint. I think the Army primed the jeeps when they sold them as decommissioned. I am guessing my Jeep came from Marfa Army Air Field which had 3000 people at the peak. They graduated their last class of pilots in May 45 and were shutdown by December 45. So this May 1945 jeep was in military service a very short time.

Nick!

Sorry to not get back to you sooner. Short answer: Not much and have not started the engine yet. I used some Marvel Mystery Oil in the cylinders to lubricate and turned the motor by hand. Replaced oil, plugs, points, condenser. Bendix was shot so I replaced that. Fuel pump was leaking so I rebuilt it. It looks like I have a stuck valve, stuck open. I have not removed the valve cover yet. I want to move it inside first.

With two rotted tires, I decided to start with the wheels. I've got two combat wheels and four civies. So far I have removed the tires and sandblasted the rims. I'll mount tires after I get the rims painted and then I can roll it into the shop to look at the engine and brakes. If possible, I'll get it running enough to pass inspection. I don't have a title and I need an inspection report before I can start the title process. After that, I'll start on more serious jeep work.

I seem to recall that we have a wager on how many revolutions until it starts. I want to resolve that valve problem before I try to start it with sparks!

Hello Michael

Nice to know my jeep has a twin. I'd suggest we meet in the middle but that would be the Atlantic! I'll let you know how work progresses.

Best to all,
Rob

Hello Rob
Sounds as if your getting closer to that big start-up day. Yes we have indeed got that little friendly wager on how many turns its going to need before the engine fires up. I'm looking forward to hearing and seeing that little gpw on you tube

Hi,
Great to see this Jeep, Guess what I own its brother 268333, mine is all matching like yours and in a comparable condition, strangely enough it has the same type of gun rack mounted between the seats, they must have received them at the same time for some reason? I will Post photos in a week or two. Very pleased to see your lovely GPW and to think that its brother has survived in a similar condition, please post more updates if you can
Matt

Hello all I thought I would chime in on this thread since I also have the pleasure of holding a 45 with matching SN’s, 268896 5/21/45. I will post some pics once I figure it out. First thing I am doing is replacing the fuel system. It sat for a while with no fuel so tank/lines and filter all had rust. Filter inlet and exit completely blocked and bowl had a hole. Looking forward to digging in if my wife doesn’t kill me first.

Hello,

Welcome to the G !

We are looking forward to seeing a post with pictures of your jeep !

We all love jeep pictures !!

Ron has all the parts you may need for your fuel system.
I just got a fuel line set, and an F marked fuel filter.
Earlier I got a nice JMP made gas tank.

Best Regards,
Ray

Ray,
Did you paint the fuel lines? The originals I took off had been painted. I have an Photobucket account but darned if I can figure out how to post the pictures.

Hello Don,

That is a good question.
I will likely leave them bare metal on my 43 GPW.
I have a 42 Gpw that I put new fuel lines on, and painted them.

It looks good, BUT ...
A very important ground clamp goes on the "unpainted" fuel line on the fire wall by the air cleaner where it approaches
the firewall mounted fuel filter.
I had to scrape the paint off to make the ground connection.
That ground makes your fuel gauge work, or is supposed to .

Many times during rebuilds or paint touch ups, the fuel lines may have been painted via overspray, even at the factory when doing a final touch up spray.

I am sure others would know more about it.

Best Regards,
Ray

If you’re going for a true “factory” looking restoration where attention to detail is quite important then the main fuel line should be pained OD. Originally, the main fuel line from the tank to the fuel filter was fitted to the tub prior to the tub being painted.

At this point I just want to get it started and then see what else I need to tackle. Thanks for clarifying. Everything I have been taking off needs refreshing.

Hello Don,

Great plan !
Get her running first, I will recommend to you when you drain the oil, be sure to replace it with Non-Detergent Sae-30 weight motor oil.
Valvoline makes it, and it is available at Advanced Discount Auto Parts stores in Florida.

Just be sure that the bottle says non-detergent on it !
If not, you may end up with a smoking engine after it has been "cleaned" by the modern detergent oil.

I have seen a jeep my neighbor recently got, and he replaced the oil with modern detergent oil and now has smoking exhaust,
not a good thing !!

Also, another friend a few years ago brought back a Dutch GMC CCKW Tipper truck, and it ran perfectly, no issues.

He changed the oil and used modern oil, which is detergent oil, and no sooner it then started smoking.
He was very upset with that, and always warned us about using only non detergent motor oil in original WW2 engines.

You will have to really look for the correct oil, and it costs about $ 7 or $8 a quart, but well worth it !

We are looking forward to pictures of your GPW !
What I do to post a picture is to take a pic with my cell phone, and I text it to myself, and then save it to the phone.
It gets resized via this method automatically, then make a G post on your jeep, and click on the attachments button below, then you can click on add files.
Next you select the pictures you want to post on the G, and they will show up below your post, then you click, "place inline".
You then hit preview if you want to look at what your post will look like, then hit submit, and your pics will be posted :D :D

You can also email pics to your email account and save the pics on your computer, then pull the pics from your computer and follow the same procedure.

If you have an Apple phone, you have a resizing option built it when you email the pics, that will be a-ok to fit the G.

Looking forward to your successful picture posting !

Good luck !!

Best Regards,
Ray
