At least the block is. I think its a CJ block. I believe some of the engine components are original WWII (for example, air cleaner has data plate attached, not stamped in). But block has no serial number in the usual spot (top of the block near the water pump, right side) and the casting number (down low by the starter) is 641087. According to Ren's website this is a CJ casting number - http://www.rensjeep.com/casting.htmlJim Kilbourne wrote:Lance,
how did you determine the engine is post war?

look at the water pump and just above it is a flat area at the head/gasket/block seam..
see if you see a number there?
if so, what is it?

I see the number "2415" on the vertical face of the block immediately above the water pump. Looks like there is a possibility of another number if the waterpump is removed, but I can't see any portion of a partially obscured number.

Lance,
do you find any numbers on the horizontal flat just above the pump? (on same plane as head gasket)
maybe some thing like: 1MB12345, or, J123456

Take a good pic looking down on the water pump just in front of the head. Jim will be able to see firsthand what he needs to assertain whether your engine is an MB or CJ. Next time I see you I will point it out to you.
Peace!

Re: My 1943 MB Project
by the casting numbers it is postwar...
but some with that number were GOV replacements...some were CJ..etc.
knowing the serial number will tell a part of the jeeps story...

Sorry for the slowness, I haven't checked the forum in a few weeks.
Thanks for pointing out the gussetts. I agree with you that they are incorrect. Didn't realize it until you pointed it out. I'll have to take it back to my "guy."
Secondly, yes there is a number there! I didn't see it even after looking there on a couple occasions. Scrubbed with a wire brush and it appeared. The stamping is very light and it would never come up in a photo. I believe the number is U84593AP. Last letter could also be a "B" or an "R," not 100% sure on that one.
Thanks!
Lance

Re: My 1943 MB Project
Hey All,
Wondering if my transfer case is a Ford...I noticed the gray paint on it some time ago, but didn't investigate. Today while scrubbing with the wire brush I found some F-marked bolts on it. Where should I look for Ford markings on the transfer case? There is a number to the right of the cover (see photo). Looks like C18-1.

Hi Folks! Just wanted to let you all know that my chassis is finished. Just painted it the other day. Here are a few pics. There are more on my blog, which is where I post regularly about my project (click on the globe button to the right under my profile information and it will take you there).

Nice jeep Lance. I like your restoration thread and the updates. My 43 MB is much farther back in the restoration process and was in much worse shape than yours.

In the garage...ha! It's not mounted up yet as I want to get the underside wiring done and get the engine/trans/t-case in first. Still working on that also.thidisbogus wrote:Very nice work indeed Lance. Where is the tub at?
