1942 GPW recent find
This one showed up at a dealer auction last weekend and I picked it up. Don't know much history about it, haven't had time to contact the seller yet, from all the trailer hitches (front and back) on it I could guess that it might have been used at a marina, also looks to have had an electric winch on the front (now long gone). It was sold as a 1946 Willys, but I saw the GPW style tool box lids and knew it was a Ford. Cleaned off the data plate and found serial number 36923. Delivery date of 6-23-42. You can still see the hood number under the black paint U.S.A. 20129285. Speedo shows 30,483 miles. I also found the same number on the engine block and the frame so I would assume that it's never been apart, but has certainly been bubbafied quite a bit.
How unusual is it to find one with all matching numbers?

No idea what's keeping this drum from seating where it should.

Wow, what a nice find!
Good luck with the restoration, that will certainly turn into a beauty!

I don't know if it was a script body, it's had a bubba tailgate cut into it. Wouldn't June 42 be a little late for the Script?

You have a great GPW !!
Very Solid from the looks of it, matching numbers, etc.
Get that unit restored! Someone has taken good care of that jeep since
the war !!

You may be able to power wash off some of that black paint to reveal the original paint,
just be sure to use the right tip on the power washer so you don't mess it up,or damage the underlying paint.
A dispersed spray of water, not a single jet of water !!
I just washed old single layer of paint off a jeep, and it left the original paint in good shape.

Re: 1942 GPW recent find
I have a secret magic camera that makes cars look good, this jeep is a whole lot rougher than the photos show. Under the recent spray bomb black paint with the white racing stripe (I can only assume this was to make it more saleable), is a bright metallic 1970's green paint. There is a car dealer myth that says that 1970's green paint will make a car last forever but also make it unsaleable ! Hey at least the motor spins over and sounds like it has compression.

Really great find M38A1, you're so lucky to find a matching numbers jeep like that.
When you take your next piccies would you mind getting me a closeup of the Filterette box under the dash please?
Thanks

This is the only additional photo I have right now of the filter box. I'll try to get some more tomorrow.

I think this is what the filtrette and the data plate will probably look like:

Re: 1942 GPW recent find
Hello My M38A1,
From my GPW studies and databases, Your GPW 36923 should have come from the Louisville, Ky. assembly plant. The hood number should be the original one for this GPW.
1942 or 1943 four way ( data plate, frame, motor, and hood number ) matching numbers GPWs are very hard to find after 70 years. Great Find!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: 1942 GPW recent find
Thanks Tom, this is the first WWII Jeep I have found that still has the hood numbers. Makes me want to look over every wartime photo I can find and see if there is a match. Wouldn't that be wild to find an in-service photo?
