Re: '43 Willys Jeep
Alright, I know it's been awhile since I updated this, but I haven't been idle. I've been working getting things back together and ripped out, etc.
First,
I did my carburetor.
Next, I got the engine out. I'll be taking it apart over Thanksgiving and getting it to a machine shop shortly after that.
Whoever wanted this jeep orange was pretty thorough. After that, though, the engine stayed orange despite the exterior color changing to blue and brown and green.
Slow and steady.

Re: '43 Willys Jeep
Ez8,
Great to see another close stablemate. Please meet Mb #210793 11-Feb-43. Same day as your Dad!
http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.ph ... lit=210793
You've got a great jeep to work with there, nice straight panels and a lovely floor by the looks.
Would be great to see a clear closeup of your data plates when you uncover them please.
Also interested to hear if your drive shaft is the standard skinny one or the fat type.
Good luck with the resto.
Thanks!

Re: '43 Willys Jeep
Just checked Jim Kilbourne's excellent articles and your engine number appears to be a spot on match for the jeep.
http://web.archive.org/web/200305131137 ... /articles/
The tub number is 2000-3000 lower than I was expecting but still well within the parameters to make it a match (in my opinion). I'm sure Jim will contribute his knowledge at some point.
The tub number is generally 97000-99000 lower than the frame number on ACM Type I bodies. Your body is 101400 lower but if you look in Jim's data table you'll see some examples that are 103000-104000 lower.
Looks like you have an all matching jeep, you lucky devil you. The icing on the cake would be if the axles and tranny match too.....

Re: '43 Willys Jeep
Hi Ez8,
Does your jeep have a filterette installed under the dash? Mine was missing and I'm having trouble finding which filterette model I need.
Thanks

Re: '43 Willys Jeep
Sutts,
Do you mean a fuel strainer or something different? If you mean a strainer, no, I didn't have one of those so I'll be looking for one, too.
I'm also looking for a 6V generator and electrical system. Mine got converted to 12V at some point and, while convenient, I'd like to make it 6V.

No, Sutts is probably referring to the radio filterette that is under the dash on the passenger side. Should be a metal box. Inside would be components to the jeep's radio noise suppression system. My late model '43 MB did not have one when I bought mine, and I don't know if it ever had one. I have so many holes drilled in my jeeps floor, I can't tell what is original and what is post war mods.

Thanks Ethan, that's what I meant - radio filterette.
Mine was missing too. As a little project I'm compiling a list of filterette types fitted by serial number.

No, I did not have one.
I did have a hornet's nest. I'm not sure if that was standard issue or not. I didn't see it in the ordinance catalog.

Re: '43 Willys Jeep
A busy weekend.
I got my engine completely disassembled. I'll be going through the parts and cataloging everything that needs replacing over the coming weeks. Unfortunately, December is a busy time at work, but none the less, I'll make time.
Lots of pictures:
I kept trying to use this thing, but every time I did, I was forced out of my own house. (This is a joke, and a heavy handed one at that.)
My hypothesis is that when the engine was painted orange it was rebuilt. Note the valve springs are orange.
With the right tools, any job is easy.
Pistons 3 and 4 exhibit unusual wear...
At least 50 years of wear on there.
The gunk in the oil pan was so thick I could write my forum name in it.
Textbook shot. Right out of the manuals.
I have to note here that I was using an engine stand that I've used for smaller, German engines so when I got the (comparatively) big block up on there it was tipping all over the place. I steadied the block with one hand and lifted the crank out of there on to the stool with the other, all the while screaming girlishly (that crank is heavy!). Luckily no one was home to hear me.
I've been bagging engine parts like a detective at a crime scene.
It's rope! I've got a lead on some more. We'll see how it turns out.
More detail of piston 3 and 4. Yes, definitely time for a rebuild.
Close up of the center of the crankshaft.
Thanks for reading.

Great work Ed! Thanks for posting so many photos. I think I know why your pictures are so small. I had the same problem in the beginning until I figured it out. WHen you copy and paste your URL to your photo, make sure and remove the "/thumbs" part from the URL address string. It is what is making your pictures so small.

Re: '43 Willys Jeep
I know it's been a while since I've updated this thing, but again, I have not been idle. I've been waiting on warm weather and my machinist.
I took the engine to one machinist who cleaned up the block for me and found 4 cracks: three under the distributor and one on the deck on an exhaust port. He suggested I use JB Weld on the distributor cracks and for the one on the deck...let it ride. Not convinced I took my block to the folks at Richard's Cylinder Head Repair in Indianapolis and they did an amazing job fixing everything. All cracks welded, a crack in the head was found and repaired, cylinder bored (due to heavy pitting), cam polished, crank balanced, metal primed, and new parts (pistons, rings, valves, springs, etc) ordered. Very friendly shop and reasonable pricing. I'm very happy with their work.
The crack on the deck, welded.
The head and cam.
The block.
Also: The gasket set that I got is from Victor Reinz and came with rope seals for the rear main. I've got some NOS ones that I found so I'm not worried, but if anyone else is looking, apparently Victor Reinz has them.

Re: '43 Willys Jeep
Thanks for posting the update Ez8 - good call on getting those cracks fixed right!
Did you find an assembly (?) date stamped on the bottom of the block when you had it apart?
Paul
