1944 GPW - 203678 - 6/20/44
Well I figured it was time to introduce my jeep here on the G. I have been a long time lurker, and rarely a poster but I imagine that will change as I start tackling this project. It really is just a matter of time and finances, a reality that is familiar to many of us. I have loved these jeeps since I was little, and I still have the tiny army jeep toy that probably started it all. After years of searching and saving money from freelancing, I was able to acquire this gem from a good West Coast friend at the end of October of last year, finding a decent project jeep on the East Coast has proved to be really difficult. Today the jeep turns 68 with a date of delivery of 6/20/44, so I thought I would share it with everyone. Unfortunately the engine is a post-war CJ-2A engine, but I do have a late 1944 GPW long block for it. As you can see from the pictures, it is mostly intact with most of the hard to find parts like the top bows, f-marked rear seat, f-marked blackout guard, etc. present. It does have a few mb parts here and there, like the earlier 3-bolt tire carrier on the back. The bubba modifications were made by a skilled hand, like the CJ tank addition, front bumper, and rear bumper plate that was custom fitted (I'm nervous to see what lies underneath). It has the typical rust damage on the passenger's side and the frame horns are slightly bent. I'm new to restorations, so I wanted to start with the best project that I could find. But the ironic part is that I don't want to touch it because of its great condition. I haven't done anything to it other than gather missing parts, and I already want another one (maybe one I'm not afraid to restore). I really caught the fever! I have met some great people and made new friends already, so I look forward to the future. Right now the jeep is nicknamed "rabbit" because of the abundance of cottontails that hang out in my yard. I included some photos below. And here is a link with more pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/62131286@N ... 786233965/. Let me know what you think and if you have a jeep of a similar D.o.D., please share! I have plenty of rookie questions for the future. Hopefully I will land some more projects this summer to fund my obsession.

Hi Jody,
Looks like another great example of a GPW that would be great to see on display next week at the MVPA Convention in Huntsville, Alabama.

Very nice GPW. Looks like Bubba did something strange in the back, as the taillights fill into the rear crossmember/bumper area. You do have a lot of hard to find parts. Is your pintle original too? Looks like you have combat wheels?

Thanks! Actually, the taillights are right where they are suppose to be and a custom plate has been bolted to the rear crossmember which overlaps part of the tub. I'm not sure what the purpose of it is, perhaps to give the hitch more support? Other than a couple of extra bolts put into the body, existing holes where used in the crossmember, very strange. I'll take it off soon to see what lies beneath. The pintle is f-marked and came with the jeep, including the combat wheels that were on it (the seller restored those and added new tires).thidisbogus wrote:Very nice GPW. Congrats!!
Looks like a great jeep, and the fact that it still has so many original parts is definitely a bonus!!
Have fun with it!!!

Re: 1944 GPW - 203678 - 6/20/44
I know this isn't the forum for it, but since this is a June of 44 GPW, why does it have the radio filterette under the dash? At this point, was not type II suppression standard? I don't mean to hijack the thread, I am just curious as to why.
Thanks,
Sean

Hi Jody,
Nice jeep. I would be reluctant to do much to a jeep like this other than to remove the likes of the non-standard rear plate. I would also be inclined to research the data plate a little more as it appears to be a replacement plate. The rivets are non standard. The manuals listed are the earlier TM-10 series which by the DOD of your jeep I think should be the snl-g and the TM-9, ie Ordnance Department. I have not checked DOD against serial number, but it may be worth verifying this info as it could also have been "guesstimated". Researching info like this is just an interesting aspect of the hobby and does not detract from what is a nice jeep, I hope you enjoy it and the whole "jeep thing" as much as I have over many years. Cheers, Steve.

Re: 1944 GPW - 203678 - 6/20/44
Hey Jody, I have had another look at your data plate and am having a different thought. It seems as though the change from the TM-10 series manuals to the TM-9 series manuals may have occurred during June 1944, making your 203678 correct and one of the last of the GPWs with the 1348/1349 0n the data plate, sorry. I have seen plates either side of yours where the earlier plate is TM-10 and the later one is TM-9. The rivets attaching your plate to the glove box door are however definitely non-standard indicating that for some reason that the plate has not always been attached to this door. It may have been removed and refitted or might be from another door??? Steve.
