Congrats on a very nice find!! Looks a heck of a lot better than many I've seen lately around here in Central NY where rust has usually eaten them alive.........

Woaw, what a beautiful find !
As your Jeep is unrestored, would you please answer to the following questions :
- What are the date code indicated on the generator and the distributor ?
- What kind of pulley on the generator ? molded or stamped ?
- Is there any marking on the gerrycan bracket ? 42B22590 or D66675 ?
- Is there any date code on your windshield glasses ?
- What is the reference on the fuel filter bracket ? 1504212 or 1595360
- What is the material of the radiator's material ? copper or steel ?
- How many spring on the front springs ? I count 11 springs on the rear springs, am I correct ?

Thanks for your patience.
Willys MB 399579 - December 44
Register number (I've found it ! ) 20661416 S

I will print out these questions and try to answer them - you may need to be patient, but I will gather as much info as I can. One thing - the glass isn't original, so I regret unmarked. Oh, and the radiator is also a replacement.

It is also worth contacting Marie-Christine - she has an unrestored Willys 285 numbers from mine

I am also curious about the number of springs. I have a 23 Jan 45 MB and I have spring sets of 8 and 10. I did notice the springs on the front had the Ford style clips and the springs in the rear had the Willy's style. I have been spending a lot of time with my springs so I look forward to seeing the number.

I had a similar wiper motor on my windshield and I thought these were not issued until later in 45. Maybe they were added during a depot visit?

Hello Onaway,
Normally a 1945 MB schould have 10 front and 11 rear springs.
I did do this research a couple of weeks ago. I did find some posts on the G that confirmed this. I have a OCT 1944 with 10 and 11 but because it was used by the French and did go to La Maltournee in 1955 I thought my springs were maybe not original, so I wanted to find out.
Unfortunately I did not find the date when this change to more springs happened but I believe I read somewhere that it was early 1944.
Nothing about this change in the Lloyd White books ( or at least I did not find it). This is surprizing to me.

Htc,

Thank you for the reply. Working on the springs the last few I've found myself counting springs in every photo of Jeeps near my Jeeps birthdate. :D

Horrocks, thank you for posting photos. It really helps me when I get stuck on something and I need to know what it should look like.

Hello Onaway,

(Now I am home and have access to the documentation)
Some more info about the swithch from 8/9 to 10/11 leaf spring assemblies.
In the Ordnance Supply Catalog ORD 9 SNL G-503 (linked to the TM9-803) of 15 FEB 1945 on page 192 one can find that the Part numbers for spring assemblies changed to WO-A-8463 (10 leafs) and WO-A-15728 (11 leafs).
WO-A-8463 supersedes both the WO-A-612 (left spring assembly with 8 leafs) and WO-A-613 (right spring assembly also with 8 leafs but different from the left?)
WO-A-15728 supersedes the WO-A-614 9 leaf spring assembly.
Somewhere I did read and took a note that this change happened mid '44. That is all I could find out at this moment.

I did have a look at the ORD 9 SNL G-503 of JAN 15, 1944 and only the WO-A-612 for front left; WO-A-613 for front right and WO-A-614 for both rear sides are mentioned. 8 and 9 leafs. Page 162.
No mentioning there yet of these WO-A-8463 and WO-A-15728 Part Numbers or 10 or 11 leaf spring assemblies.
I do not know how to find the date things did change.
Maybe we can find out by doing a survey on the G?

So, a mere 7 years since I started this thread, tentative progress begins!

The Jeep has stood under open cover during that time, so there has been some inevitable, if actually only cosmetic, deterioration. I started to pull her apart some years ago, but other things intervened. What has become evident is that the Jeep will need more than a cosmetic restoration. When it was last run the engine was running rough, intermittently losing oil pressure, there were several oil leaks and the entire running gear, chassis and underbody was coated in dried oil and filth. There was also an impression of elliptical motion in the crankshaft, which may or may not have been due to a bent pulley. Inspired by the obvious need to move forward with this project and at the very least get the stripped parts cleaned and into dry storage from whence they can be restored and painted without risk of further more serious deterioration, last weekend I began by removing the tub and pulling the engine.
