Re: BARN FIND BRITISH ARMY JEEP
Jim, the answer to that is no. I think best left as found. I may have a small tin of paint mixed to match the existing colour. I could use that just for touching in the worst areas.
As for the lights. I thought I may remove the non -original indicators & rear lights, but have decided to leave as is, as I am unsure if these were fitted by the British Army
I will probably re paint the hood as I figure the star & numbers were painted on by original owner
Looking through the registration document this GPW appears to have had just 2 owners in one family since being sold by the Army in 1959.

Re: BARN FIND BRITISH ARMY JEEP
An excellent find spyder..
I hope your block is'nt frost cracked.
Mine is ex British Army, and also had those rounded corner handles ( I thought bubba had made them!) and the small light fixed to the rear chassis, I must still have them as I kept most of what I took off.
I think the horn too is a replacement British army one, mine was identical, as were the side lights on the wings and the plated grill holes for the black out lights.
Jeff

There I was, upside down with nothing on the clock but the makers name!

Re: BARN FIND BRITISH ARMY JEEP
Hi Jeff & Jim
The Jeep did come with a broken horn.
I fitted the one in the picture, it was taken from a Willys CJ3A, so looks period
As for the cracked block. Not sure, but do not think so. The Radiator had been removed when found, but came with vehicle
I have removed the cylinder head & just had it skimmed. Looks good.
The engine has seized on three pistons, hopefully just due to standing & not overheating
The vehicle will be going down to Universal Jeep in Guildford next week, so fingers crossed engine is rebuildable

Re: BARN FIND BRITISH ARMY JEEP
Hi Spyder
My Ford GPW EX British army jeep had an overhaul by the same workshop as yours B398,, on 3/55 army reg 58 YJ 01.
The jeep has the same rear lights as yours (see photo attached) My jeep is also original and unrestored. All I have done to it is overhaul the brakes, Fit a set of tyres, and I had to overhaul petrol pump as it was leaking petrol into the engine sump.
The British army did a good job of overhauling our jeeps.
Good luck with your jeep you have a nice find there. It would be a shame to over restore it as it look so good as it is,
Best regards Ian

Re: BARN FIND BRITISH ARMY JEEP
I understand why the British Army changed the headlights to Butler ones and added side marker lights and rear convoy light but why did they change the body handles especially when there was a war on why would they bother?

Re: BARN FIND BRITISH ARMY JEEP
Hi. when i got my jeep it came as an unfinished resto. most parts were put in boxes when it was stripped down . one of the rear corner handles was missing so i copied the other .it was the british pattern which i found would be easier to replicate than a u.s. made one. so maybe it was just so they could replace damaged/missing handles by useing a normal pipe bender rather than more sophiciated equipment.
Regards Bernard.

That makes sense, so the most vulnerable parts were changed so field replacement was easier. thanks.

Re: BARN FIND BRITISH ARMY JEEP
Graham, I think the handles are a post-war item, as they seem to be a feature of REME/Ministry of Supply rebuilds from the 1950s.
I am not even convinced that my tub is wartime production. It is a standard late-production tub, but has no numbers and was missing a few drill-holes - for example no side reflector holes. The Butler headlights and horn were presumably fitted at the same time as part of a 12V system.

Re: BARN FIND BRITISH ARMY JEEP
Can anyone tell me what is the significance of the trio of bolts heads that appear on the metal panel below the front of windscreen.
As you can see there are two sets of three in the picture (both sides) The first set is for the frame clamps, but what is second set for?
Over the original Olive drap & under the Peace time British Army green, you can also see the white paint again, same as front grill
