GPW #51198, Warning lots of photo's

Post by DutchGPW » Wed Feb 04, 2009 1:33 pm

A little update:

I have got some some small things done, just to get the feeling 8) . I removed some stuff that don't belong like licenseplate + holder, Headlight protectors, a heavy steel plate on the hood wich was attached with popnails. And offcourse gattered more info and bought some new books like Al American Wonder 1 and 2. I also looked for any original OD paint and maybe hoodnumbers but unfortanatly it was all sanded off when the jeep was made smooth with filler. And i removed some filler at the back to see if the tub is a script one, but it isn't. Today i discovered that the axles are original GPW parts so that is good news.

Some pictures to finnish with:

Check the rear panel above where the script would be. The hood number was also painted there at the factory.

Hi David thanks for the tip, But i'm afraid a previous owner sanded the body complete to bare metal and then made the body straight with bondo or filler (what is the correct word?). I removed some more at the back but there is no paint left underneath the bondo/filler. The same with the hood.

Hi,

Thanks for the compliments, also for my english 8) .

I 'found' some pictures from when i went to England and pick my jeep up. I know it is not not the right order but didn't want to keep them to myself!

Image
Engine in the back of the car, this because of weight issues of what the car is allowed to tow...

The last picture is from inside the eurotunnel train..

ps i wont throw the steeringwheel away, however i have no idea (yet) on how to restore it.

Hi,

An update:

- I removed the filler from the back of the jeep.
- I removed the rearlights
- I found out that there was a plate welded on the driverside of the jeep (where the toolindents are). I traced the outlines from the plate (means also removing lots of filler)
- At the rear there was a small plate welded over the .... hole(?)
- I removed the 2 plates.

Well pictures say more then words so:

Image
Here you can see the smal welded plate too.

This is the filler that came of the rearpanel

There is some rust on the sidepanel and at the bottom its pretty bad, but i dont think i need to replace the whole panel, do i?

Well i had fun removing the plates and to discover things 8) .

With regards Gideon.

Hi
Good luck with your new toy.
I have the same engine casting, without SD prefix. You'll find the serial on the flat ridge above the waterpump. Mine is 25B9330 (1960), with a rebuild tag from RCEME in '68.
Look at the engine survey in the M38 forum.
Do I see an internal handbrake? Ford used only external handbrakes, so that must be installed later.

Here we are again, a little work has been done. Because i had the floo i haven't done to much :? . Today i picked op an other 'toy' .
It's a Willys 1/4 trailer. see link: http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.ph ... 0d6#805651

What have i done with my jeep, i have disassembled the front and steering tube 8) . the steeringtube is bend, can this be fixed? maybe cold press? The steeringbox is F-marked and i found my first f-marked bolts (connecting steeringbox to frame).

Photo's:

I was to late to avoid this photo, i'm sorry  .

I did a little inspection at my motor and found rust in the cooling area. I think this is rust wich came out of the radiator instead beeing inside rust in the engine. Can someone confirm?? the rust is just like dust so thin.

Hi Gideon,

You have nothing to worry about with the rust, when I re-built my MB engine there was a huge amount of of horrible rusty stuff when I knocked out the welsh (core) plugs.

The engine came out spotless after it was tanked & runs like a dream now, so you should have no problems with yours.

Good luck with it.

It is interesting to note that GPW 51198 came from Northern California....my GPW 17963 was rebuilt 15-20 years ago at Surplus City in the San Fernando Valley (LA area) and motor number GPW 51122 was installed at that time or possibly was already in it and was rebuilt by them at that time....and it runs like a champ now! I bought my GPW in that area and it now resides just 18 miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge.

If Tom W. identified the frame number and data plates as Dallas origin, perhaps the motor in my GPw came from a jeep assembled there as well?

Hi Chuck.

Tom identified my GPW as being from the Louisville plant. The motor number is scary close 8) ... I would love to find a motor that close to mine GPW's number. Thanks for sharing.

@ John: thanks, I just have to wait and see untill i get the cylinderhead off in which condition the motor really is...

Bob you're welcome

I have lifted the body of the chassis. It was verry easy, because it was not bolted at all... Also i disassembled the transmission, it's in pretty good shape but still need some parts replaced. OK pictures say more...

it all fits in de garagebox but tight. Keep in mind it also contains a cut up Willys MBT and tools. I really need a bigger space  .

Transmission it has T84-A 184 on the lid and GPW7006 on the case.
