Chuck,

You're completely right. Made or delivered on Christmas Eve. So last week we celebrated her 76th birthday. It's kind of unbelievable these vehicles have survived so much time. Will post pics of it soon but both front and back have been heavily 'abused' by one of the previous owners. Front horns are bent and cracked. Reinforcement welded on. Have to do some serious surgery on that. The rear crossmember is bent and cracked as well. Somebody towed it without the pintle installed I think.
Overall it the frame is in good condition though. Must have spent most of it's life in sunny California, since I didn't find serious rust on the frame. Body has some spots I have to weld new material in.
Still hoping to find Original markings on the body. The hood was blasted or at least stripped and repainted some time, no markings visible there. I'm not sure about the back. It's OD green on top, than another green and than some sort of blue/gray, like the markings they added in the factory. So it's difficult to say if there is any marking left. If not, I think the hood nr. will be close to W-2037397.

To be continued....

By the way, the GPW engine doesn't run yet. Engine turns, starter needed a little attention (bendix) and now I'm working on the distributor. It did cranck but only fired in the exhaust sometime, so definately a timing issue. Springs in the distributor didn't look too fresh and the weights didn't move freely too.

Can't wait to hear it run. However, another (early) engine will be installed as it is more period correct (MB105xxx). It came with the jeep.

Jos

Hello Jos,

I would call that " California Gold " !!!!

It is beautiful, and rust free for the most part :D :D :D

Win, Win situation :D :D :D :D

PS- I have a "California Gold" Slat in my barn too :D :D :D :D

Also, Joe's Motor Pool produces a perfect reproduction, non radioactive, Slat Speedometer, that looks perfect !

$215 on their Ebay store.

Your speedometer looks like it might be from a WW2 M-8 or M-20 Armored Car.
Do not open it, or any WW2 speedometer, or M series , as they are still highly radioactive and so is the paint dust residue.

Rick,

What are the body number and engine number from your jeep? I think my body and frame are matching numbers, but I’m not sure. Engine is currentlya GPW, so that’s definately not matching. An early Willys engine came with the jeep but I’m not sure If it’s matching or at least in range.

Jos

Hello Jos.

The body/tub # is 6971.

I also have the wrong engine, also a GPW, so I cannot help with that.

I have the original data plates, but the frame tag was damaged, but is MB 106112

Rick,

Did you ever discover your Original Hood nr.? In the WAA Surplus Jacksonville Florida Slat nr I06II3 shows up, with Hood nr. W2037347. Did you know? That makes a guess for your Original nr. a lot easier :-). I stumbled upon it when searching my Original hood nr.

Hi Guys,

in case you're interested: after some research on the net I found a bunch of pics from my slat grill from a couple of years ago. Not only a happy story, but it tells me new things about the jeep as well :-). At least why it had gotten a new OD coat

Not to forget it got at least 2 other owners after Primal4x4 and before I bought it last year!

What do you guys think? There must be a Registration number under all that paint, or not? I see some Original OD at some spots.

Enjoy!

Disassembled most of the jeep now. Front axle seems to be in good condition. Should I replace all bearings? Machining date of the axle looks like.... I know what I want to read but please advise me on your opinions.

Made more pics, If U want to see something just ask.

Regards,

Jos

The axle assembly dates look like 1-7-4(2)?

What are the dates on your ring gears?

I would replace the bearings, races and seals.

Hi Michael,

I think the axle is Original to the vehicle. That should date the machining of the axle prior to 12-24-41. So I (want to  ) read 17-12-41, but both first and last 1 are hard to read. Will look for the rear axle tomorrow.

By the way, Where can I find those dates on the ring gear? Do you have a pic for example?

Thanks,

Jos
