hi frank, i'm not sure i'm in your early vep range, but i have a 42 gpw (serial # 27505 manufactured 6/42) my dad purchased right after the war in san francisco. it's pretty much all original (new fuel pump, and carb). he had just got home from the war, had been bidding on a jeep at the veteran auctions, and never getting one, in spite of many jeeps listed. he finally asked a supply sergeant what he was doing wrong, he was told he should be bidding on 75 or 100 etc, then he would have a chance for 1 (they were being sold in large lots). he did this, and got 2 jeeps in the next auction--a gpw and an mb for $500 each. he gave the mb to his brother who also just returned from france. the gpw had just had a replacement gpw engine put in, so that was why he kept that over the mb. i have not gone through and looked for that engine#, and don't have the hood number (i'm trying to find a picture before my dad first painted it. i painted a couple times in highschool, too
my dad was a californian, who stayed in the service. he drove it across the country to new york with my mom (a north carolinian he met at an ice rink in baltimore during the war---she was a welder at a b26 plant at that time), was shipped to bremerhaven where they drove it till they purchased a car in 1951. brought it back to the states with them (he also had a bantam trailer he left in europe, since he could only bring 1 vehicle back. he paid another GI to claim the jeep for the ship, and he brought the car back), was driven by my mom's younger brother in the 50's in north carolina when we were stationed overseas again, then by myself in the 60's when in high school in georgia. when i moved to oregon in the early 80s, put in the back of a uhaul to bring out. have driven very little since that time (was a difficult starter---used to jump it running down the hill from our house in georgia---but house in portland was flat). i have just got it running after sitting in the garage for 10 years (i have some time now to learn about engines, etc). a new carter carb, really made the difference, and fires up easy now. going to work on brakes etc. attached a couple of pics (this is my first post, so unclear if will go through). robert matteri

Hello Robert,
You have such a history with your beautiful jeep,
your jeep would could be the stuff of a great jeep story book !!
You could call it "Tales of a WW2 Jeep " and all the adventures that is has been on in its lifetime so far,
and all the people that have loved it over the last 75 years !!!
What a great story that would make, maybe you know someone who is a writer that could do it well
A cross country drive across the USA, then a sea journey to Germany and places around there after the War, then back to USA and your family's continued use of it.
I can see a book, and a great film in the making
Please post more pics !!
Best Regards,
Ray

hi guys, thanks for the nice and kind comments. since i will be needing lots of advice in the future (like how to get a stuck distributor to move so i can fine tune, etc, etc), and since you asked, i used my phone to copy a few more pics from the past. since my dad really only took people with photos in them (he had a leica he purchased in germany), most of the jeep pics have family included. very few of the pictures he took, have the jeep, of course. i remember that he and his brother built a wood shell that my dad and mom used in europe (in the pics). he was stationed at the free port of trieste. when they drove down from bremerhaven, they were given jerry cans of gas and loaded up every available space at the port before leaving, since there were no gas stations, before the drive to italy. my dad remembers---no bridges left anywhere in germany, it seemed. it was a surreal time, the 'null hour' as the germans say---they would only find one hotel that was undamaged enough that was open, in say all of munich. anyways, here are some more shots. best. robert

Hello Robert,
What an incredible living history you have with your jeep.
Such great pictures !!!
I doubt that there are many out there that could come close to your jeep story.
Absolutely incredible , wonderful !!
Thanks for posting this history !
Does your uncle's jeep still also exist somewhere ?
I would suggest posting all of this in the unrestored jeep section, or jeep history section, as that way far more G503ers will actually see your incredible jeep tale
You bring a very nice addition to the G503 family !!
Best Regards,
Ray

hi ray, thanks for your comments. i will look at the other sites when i get a break, too. unfortunately, my uncle sold his mb in the 60s---he told me he regretted having done so, every time he saw ours. he did give me his tech manuals, another TM 9-803, but he had the TM 9-1803-B--"the power train ord manual", as well. my dad had the TM 9-1803-A---"the engine and engine accessories" manual. so now i have all three. they are so helpful for a novice like me to really see inside the jeep. robert

Just saved a GPW:
SN: 3391
DoD: March 10, 1942
Despite Bubba's best attempts, most of the VEP particulars are still there (Minus the back script panel). MB frame (with GPW serial number) and all. He will be returned to his prior glory. And, let it be known, is name is Kilroy.
Any information fellow VEP guys can provide would be awesome.
