Engine identification help

Post by MB1944 » Fri Feb 18, 2022 6:30 pm

I recently came across this engine. I've googled all the numbers to no end without success. Can anyone please let me know what this engine goes to.

Note the double stamp on the engine S/N. It's my guess the first two digits of the block s/n refer to the year.

Probably would. I'm still searching the web trying to find what vehicles this engine came in.

Before WW II, Willys-Overland Motors, Inc. made civilian vehicles Model 37, 38, 48, 39, 440, 441, and 442, spanning 1937 to 1942.

Your engine block with cast in part number 635713 is not listed as a separate part in pre-WW II parts lists because engine blocks were sold only as cylinder block assemblies with bearings, and prewar often with pistons fitted. They were never sold as a bare block using its casting number as the Willys part number. I believe your cylinder block with casting number 635713 was part of cylinder block and bearing assembly 635709 used in Model 37, 38, and 48 vehicles.

Your cylinder head with casting number 630307 was produced sometime earlier than the Model 37 vehicle, and was used in an unknown (to me) earlier model Willys vehicle. It is not the correct cylinder head for a 635709 cylinder block assembly, but likely was installed during a rebuild because it was available and fit.

Engine serial numbers for the Model 37 ran from 37-1001 to 37-64467. Engine serial numbers for the model 38 were 65001 and higher, so your lower engine serial number 37-60320 was for a Model 37 Willys vehicle. I don't know what the "C" after the last numeral means. Hope this helps.

you can put those numbers up in the tec section forum, lots of info there, same as what fred says, Willys model 37. No water cooling around the cylinders, babbit bearings most likely still in there. I have never been able to sell one other to the junk yard, Willys model 37 owners are going resto mod with 400 hp rather than 40 ish.
Looks like it has all its parts, fire it up and see if it runs, or take a comp test on her, it will bolt into a jeep but it will be all wrong.

I cleaned around the spark plugs and blew out the crap. Removed the plugs and poured some Marvel oil inside. She turned over by hand with no problem.

Yeah, there are not many people restoring those cars with stock engines. I would like to sell it though.

Thank you Fred, that was a big help. So those first two digits in the S/N represent the vehicles model, not the year?

Correct. Nevertheless, Model 37 likely aligns with Willys' 1937 model year, which is not necessarily the 1937 calendar year.
