Ford starter and generator date code?

Post by gpwmke » Mon Nov 15, 2021 6:15 pm

I have a Ford built generator and starter ( not Autolite). Don’t know if this is rare or not but the data tags are still on both units. Both units have serial numbers that start with 4X. Is this some kind of alpha numeric code that tells when they were manufactured? How do the Ford and Automate date codes differ or do they use the same letters to define the year it was made example 4X means April of 1943? What would be the code for Autolite for an April 1943 starter or generator.

Yes, April 1943 for both units. They are not rare, but they are desirable. They could be used for any G503. They would have been originally installed in a late April or May 1943 GPW.

If you get to working or restoring these, post some pics of the gpw marks on them
