glove box identification

Post by parker007 » Thu Nov 19, 2020 9:14 pm

i just purchased this glove box from a member and it look interesting different, the data plates aluminum but blank, and hinge is different. it also has 2 holes about 3/8 under data plates so i figure plates not original but hinge look like it has not been changed. does anybody have any guesses?

data plates have no stamping, so i'm thinking someone replaced with just a piece of aluminum?

Difficult to see on the picture, but it looks like the plates are attached with screws instead of rivets.
So they are not original.

actually plates are attached with rivets, but look a little different than standard gpw rivets.

Parker, I'm surprised that none of the "experts" out there knew what this was. The USMC removed the factory data plates and replaced them with their own. The data was painted or silk screened on aluminum and didn't hold up like the etched factory plates. Their rivets were very crude and looked like they had been upset between two bricks. The only surviving USMC data plates, with data intact, that I've ever seen were on a jeep with an arctic top installed which kept the plates out of the weather. I have photos of that plate if anyone is interested. It lists the maintaining branch as USMC motor transport, and has nothing stamped.
