TM:

(c)Clutch Shaft and Gear (fig. 21)Replace the clutch shaft if the splines or gear teeth are chipped or worn, if the gear has any teeth missing. Check the diameter of the pilot end of the shaft. If the diameter is less than 0.625" replace the clutch shaft. Replace if the clutch gear if it is worn or has any broken teeth.

OZ: The clutch shaft GPW 7761 and gear GPW 7762 are in very nice shape with greats markings. Unfortunately the shaft mikes to 0.623" which is 0.002" out of tolerance.

TM:

(d) Output Shaft Bearing (fig. 21) Ball bearings with loose or discolored balls or with pitted or cracked races must be replaced.

OZ: The bearing 7719 and snap ring 7783 will be replace as a matter of rebuild practice. The bearing is a New Departure 3206. The Parts Lists shows it as a ND 3206, so this appears to be the original bearing. It does not roll smoothly, it ratchets in the race after cleaning. REPLACE

(3) INTERMEDIATE GEAR ASSEMBLY (fig. 25). ‘Replace the intermediate gear if excessively worn, or if any teeth are damaged Check
the thickness of the thrust washers. If the thrust washers are less than 0.093" in thickness, replace them. Check the diameter of the intermediate gear shaft If the diameter is less than 0.750", replace the intermediate gear shaft. Replace the roller bearing, if the rollers are scored or have flat spots.

OZ: The Intermediate Gear 7742 is in really great shape. No wear and nice marking. Teeth are bright and neat. The shaft 7743 is worn slightly below limits at 0.0749" and has some minor pitting: REPLACE
intermediate gear 7742.JPG

The Thrust washers 7744 are one at 0.092" and one at 0.094". I will probably replace these.

The roller bearings appear to be in good shape, but I will replace these also to keep everything fresh. No sense scrimping when all other bearings will be replaced.

It seems like this build is keeping you busy, and it looks like it will take you some time to finish it.

I'm still splitting my time between finishing the home and doing other projects. I have a few parts on the way to finish the trans, and need to order all of the parts for the transfer case. Posting all the images takes a lot of time. It's a fun project.

TM:

(4) REAR OUTPUT SHAFT BEARING (Fig. 26) Replace the output shaft bearing cap if cracked or damaged. Replace the speedometer drive gear if it is worn or has damaged teeth. Replace the oil seal in the output shaft bearing cap housing (subpar. c, below). Replace the brake drum if it is worn or bent Replace the universal joint rear flange; if the splines are worn, Replace the dust shield on the flange if bent.

OZ: The pics of the rear bearing cap are a few posts down. Again, as a matter of practice the bearing and the seals are on order. The speedometer drive gear and other speedo components are in usable shape. Two of the parts have the Stewart Warner number on them.

I had the Brake Drum GPW2614 in the blasting cabinet while I was doing the covers and bearing cap. I ran out of time before finishing it, but will complete that at the next blast session. It looks like I can reuse it, although the outer hub where the brake band will ride is a bit concave. I'm not sure if this is a problem, but the hand brake (when the GPW is parked and in gear) should not be overly critical unless I'm on a steep incline.

There are the typical grooves in the flange. So I will get a new after market one as well. Most of the take-off flanges I see for sale have a similar problem. The deeper wear will almost ensure an oil leak around the flange shaft seal. Will still evaluate the use of speedi-sleeves, but I have some time to decide before committing.

TM:

(5) OUTPUT SHAFT ASSEMBLY (fig. 24). Replace the output shaft if the splines are worn. Small nicks can be removed by honing
and then polishing with a fine stone, Measure the inside diameter of the bushing in the output shaft. If it is greater than 0.627", replace the output shaft. Replace the output shaft gear if it is worn or has any damaged teeth. Replace the sliding gear, if it is worn or has damaged teeth. Measure the thickness of the thrust washer. If the thrust washer thickness is less than 0.103", replace it. Replace the roller bearings if they are scored or have flat spots, or if the races are nicked or cracked.

OZ: The output shaft appears to be in really good condition. The inside diameter of the bushing is 0.629"

The output shaft gear and the sliding gear are both in great shape as well. Strong teeth and little wear.

I will replace the Thrust washer GPW 7771 as mine is nicked on the edges and measures 0.099"

TM:

(7) SHIFT LEVER ASSEMBLY (fig. 29). Replace the shift levers if found bent or damaged. Replace the shift lever spring if bent or cracked. Measure the diameter of the shift lever pivot pin. If the diameter is less than 0.500", replace the pivot pin.

OZ: Both shifters are marked with an F. One is faint, the other clear. These will be reused. The springs are neither bent nor cracked. Will be reusing those as well, but the shaft is 0.0498, so I'll need a new one. Everything is scheduled for the next time I blast. :?

TM:

c. Output Shaft Bearing Cap Oil Seal Replacement (fig. 20). Drive the old oil seal out of the output shaft bearing cap housing, using a suitable driver. Drive the oil seals out, working from the inside of the cap housing. To install a new oil seal, use a driver the size of the oil seal and drive the new seal in the output shaft bearing cap housing.

OZ: As soon as the seals come in I'll be able to replace those. I cleaned the cap up, masked the machined surfaces and primed. On the two covers I primed earlier, I did not mask the mating surfaces thinking it would be easy to clean up. Lesson learned. Masking tape is your friend. It takes some time to put on and razor cut, but its really worth the effort.
7768 A.jpg
7768 B.jpg
.
.
That completes the inspection and cleaning of the TC components leaving only the few parts to sand blast and prime. I'll be on hold for a few days until parts arrive.

Just a note. I'm waiting for a replacement front bearing cap. The last post actually shows the rear bearing cap, not the front. No pics of the front cap yet.

OZ: The output shaft appears to be in really good condition. The inside diameter of the bushing is 0.629" which means it exhibits too much wear. You can just see the bushing in the enclosed image. Since the bushing in the end of the shaft is out of tolerance, i will attempt to replace the bushing. I'll post that when the part arrives. It was difficult to get a good image of the bushing.

Making quite a bit of progress on GPW 14518. I put everything on a self-made web site because I found it easier to format images and make my changes based on how I do my posts, corrections and updates. The progress of late has been better. I am nearing having everything on the chassis except the engine which is getting sleeved at the machine shop. Hopefully it wil be ready next week and I will also be ready to transition to engine work, having completed nearly everything relating to the frame and chassis.

Just click on the small Green boxes on the right side of the page to acess the desired section such as Frame, Engine, Rear Axle etc. Its not a blog or forum, just a post of work completed. Sniping can be done here. :D

I also started a section in the Electrical page with everything I am finding out about grounding straps and tinning for the VEP/EP GPW. There is a lot of information everywhere and I've taken a few weeks to begin consolidating the data I have found into one seamless thread. I started on Frame and drive train bonding first. When I begin work on the body, I'll finish adding those many bonding points also. There are probably some errors and false assumption on my part, but there is a lot of conflicting data to wade through on the various forums.
