Radiators - Early vs late

Post by Bart1015 » Thu Apr 30, 2020 7:22 am

Hello all,

Is there a known difference between early, mid or late production GPW radiators? I would like to determine if my VEP has the "correct" radiator.

I don’t know of any differences in Ford radiators, however, this is worth noting:

From jeepdraw: “Ford document show the MB radiator became optional on the GPW in late '43. Most '44 and '45 GPWs have been found with MB radiators”

I did know some GPWs got MB radiators. My 45 GPW has an MB unit and I think it’s original to it.

I wonder if the ford made units changed at all during production. I have a few in storage and all are identical. I don’t have a clue as to what year GPWs they were from though.

Both GPW-712 and GPW-713 have the early slat grill style radiators with three ribs on the top. One of the ribs is where the filler cap is mounted. Neither is GPW marked.

I know of only one example but GPW 40 was present at the MVPA Convention last year and there was a GPW “F” medallion or disc soldered where there these markings would normally be embossed on the top tank. The upper radiator tube was mounted in a different manner to the top tank. Again, this was the only “GPW” radiator like this I have ever personally seen.

Thanks Ernie,

I wonder what the cutoff should be?

As far as I know, the breakdown on radiators is as follows.

MB:
Type I: slat grill style
Type II: second style which has a different way to secure the padding
Type III: third style which has "Z" shaped flanges spot welded to the side for the padding to fit into

GPW:
Type I: has GPW marking on the back of the top tank
Type II: is the same design as the MB Type III

I don't know of any second type with the GPW marking on the back of the top tank????

Mike Wright...what say ye of the GPW radiator progression?

Informative thread. Here is an image of the radiator that came with my April 42 GPW. I cannot verify if it is original to the frame as it was restored 18-ish years ago.
