Re: engine block color
I wonder why the Ford-made engine and Ford-made T84 transmission were painted Ford grey but the Ford-made version of the Spicer model 18 transfer case was OD. Different plant?

Re: engine block color
Jeff, the transfercase was assembled later, as far as I know the transmissions/bellhousing/engine were assembled together, thus grey. The transfercase got put on later. Of course if needed they got touch-ups, so grey overspray on starter flanges, etc.
All the original GPW parts I have seen tended to have a light grey on later parts, and a pretty dark grey on earlier parts. The paint changed in 1942 though as far as I know. Not counting original replacement GPW parts that came olive drab from the factory.

Re: engine block color
Ii just tore down a gpw 3595 engine which was in the chasie with trany and transfer hooked up, it is obviously od green. no grey anywhere and the engine bore is std. crank std. i believe some early gpw engines were green. i do spot some yellow green primer on back of engine and bellhousing. i will post picture when it loaded.
