The original Willys A-1763 was still availible thru the 60's from JEEP but they did not age well, they kinda shriveled up on my shelf after 20 years.
The GPW Metal protectors are a better choice if you choose to install protection.

Here is a pic I grabbed long ago:

While I believe the metal one may still be sitting a bit high, the problem is that the combination of ill-fitting tankwells, repop tubs, repop tanks, wrong/poorly installed tank padded strips, repop seats, bent original seats, improperly replaced seat pans or any one or more of these can result in the metal protector sitting too high can occur.

I've never seen an original rubber cover, but I have seen rectangular senders before and they may be an MB thing? The SW sender on the GPW is as you know, shaped differently and guaranteeing that it does not short out the wire to the fuel gauge is paramount. So it must sit high enough to do that.

Here is a pic of an original rubber fuel sending unit cover we removed from GPW-713. It has a hole in the end for the sending unit wire.

Height- 3/4"
Length- 1 5/8"
Width- 7/8"
Measurements are approximate as age, fuel, and heat could cause distortions. Hope this helps.

I don’t think GPW 227 should have a metal cover Steve as the changeover date occurred in August 1942.

I have a Metal Sender Cover that i've had since at least the 50's. It has no stamped markings. If I remember correctly, other Ford produced vehicles such as the GTB may have shared this item. I'll try to remember to take a peek into the G-658 Master Parts List to confirm.
