It looks like I found a difference in early GPW front frame horns, but I need some pictures to help make sure before I start repairing it. Script GPW 37718, June 18, 1942 has the standard GPW angled cut on the front frame horns but the remains of the frame horns on earlier script GPW 24953 appear to have had squared frame ends. It's got the inverted U-front crossmember so it's a GPW (not Willys/Midland) style frame. Were the earliest GPW frames different in this area? I haven't noticed any other differences between the two frames. This frame (GPW 24953) also had the springs installed on the two body bolts above the transmission crossmember referred to upthread.

To repair this, do I simply need to fill in the gap in front of the hole and form a straight cut at the end, or was it a half moon shape there? If so, what radius?

Hello Jeff,

I have one of those rare squared off frame end, frames around here somewhere that I saved when I got the 3 tubs from Georgia that were basically being sold as scrap.
I am happy to have gotten 3 frames from that road trip to build up into future jeeps.

Keep us posted !

Ray

Wow that is awesome Jeff !!

Excellent workmanship on display !!
Many are not even aware of this type frame being used by Ford :o
I remember seeing one restoration on here where the guy cut an angle into the straight frame.
It was done, so I didn't want to comment on it.

Is this a new jeep restoration you are working on now ?

Any history on it ?

You can get the fake gusset rivets from Mullins that do look great if needed when adding them back on, are you going to patch weld one on the lower rail section, keeping the original rivets securing the spring mount ?

Best Regards,
Ray

Excellent workmanship on display !! Thanks again! I learned in Cub Scouts to always do my best, and I learned at work, that time is the most valuable resource we have. As a result I do my best in the amount of time that's practical. Now that I'm retired, I take my time, but am mindful that perfection is not attainable, but I still do my best.

It was done, so I didn't want to comment on it. Wow...That's too bad.

Is this a new jeep restoration you are working on now ? Yes, I just started it when that last one you saw with the flags got to the point where I can drive it and work out any bugs (the gas gauge and speedometer are already acting up and both had crappy repair parts I bought over 25 years ago when crappy parts were the norm. I'll get both fixed soon)

Any history on it ? It came from northern Wisconsin and probably served at K I Sawyer base in the UP or came from Berg's in Chicago. It's obviously a script jeep and it had a winter canvas kit installed at one time. It came to me as only a frame and nearly useless body. I'm building it side by side with GPW 37718, my first GPW and the one I've had since 1984 and never touched until lst month! There's a long backstory but that's for a build thread.

You can get the fake gusset rivets from Mullins that do look great if needed when adding them back on, are you going to patch weld one on the lower rail section, keeping the original rivets securing the spring mount ? Excatly what I'm doing! Welding a take-off bracket on one bottom and a repro on the other and using those rivets and repro brackets on the top of both sides. What you see is exactly how I got it.

It's too much and not appropriate for this thread, but I may start a build thread this summer depending on how things go.

Best Regards,
Ray

Jeff,

I am greatly looking forward to your upcoming restoration thread, and I am sure I speak for all on the G as well !
That will be great !!

Once I get my 43 done, the 45 MB restoration will start .

~~~~~~~~
I have a 15 K range early GPW, that has a flat grill on it, and Dallas built.
Interestingly there are 2 F stamps on the top area of the grill, where the F is normally placed.
Someday that will have its own thread :D
Best Regards,
Ray
Hi Jeff, The frame of GPW17331 (April 21st 1942 - Dallas) has the sloping frame horns and the 1 1/8" hole. I am 110% certain that that is original to the frame, as Bubba had not been let anywhere near the vehicle and the area was undamaged on both sides. So the old judging standards are not 100% right in this case.
Thank you Klaus! I am also confidant that this frame was oritiginally square cut and that my slightly later (June, 18) one was angle cut. The old Ford issue of FILA/LIFO, compounded by the multiple assembly plants issue, has arrisen again! Thank you for pointing out that certain date. I don't have the original data plates for this GPW but the late April/early May time frame based on the serial number would indicate that the overlap was indeed in the April/May time frame. Thank you!!!!
Glove Box Door for GPW 557
back to the glove box and discussion about lock button or press button. Mine VEP #2996 from Chester factory has early Type glove box with press button and originally applied data plates. I am sure this button cames originally with this jeep. I think using lock button on VEP was not in all of factories. My theory is that Chester used Push button from begining.
An interesting theory Michal. Have you found other VEP GPW's from Chester with the same push button?
Thanks,
Ian.
I have 3568, a chester produced GPW.
Although it needed a full restoration, it was pretty original and 80% complete when i bought it exhibiting all the early features including bronze screen catches, remains of the rubber rear light gaskets, pal nuts on the spring loaded body/chassis bolts etc. The glove box door is original complete with the original data plates so i have presumed unmessed with. It has a keyed lock on the glovebox........sorry if this is bad news.....!
