GPW 1st contract PARTS LIST. Interest sought in reproduction

Post by Ian Fawbert » Wed Oct 07, 2009 4:42 am

Hi all,

I am in a position to reproduce manuals (done properly through professional printers, not on a photocopier in the spare room!). Since i recently obtained a copy of the 1st contract GPW parts list (TM10-1348 PARTS LIST, FORD Truck 1/4 ton, CONTRACT 398-QM-10977, USA REG #'S 2054778- 2069777, FEB 1942) , i am wondering if there is any interest from people out there in reproducing this manual.

I am not sure of a price, but it would probably be dependent on interest. It would be an authentic reproduction with (as close as possible) coloured card cover as per original and clear crisp pictures/text as per original. Maybe $30-$40 each ( could be more, could be less).

They very rarely appear for sale, so i figured that if they were reproduced, there might be a fare few people who would be interested. If you are, can you either post a reply here or PM me.

Alternatively, if you know that this has already been reproduced and is out there for commercial sale, please let me know!

Thanks,
Ian.

I also put the same thread in the manuals forum if you prefer to reply there. http://www.g503.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=91&t=150650" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Ian....Below is the TM 10-1348 PARTS MANUAL you are going to reproduce, right?

Will you also be reproducing the TM 10-1349 MAINTENANCE MANUAL?

Hi Al, thanks for the interest!

Hi Chuck, yes that is the version of the parts list i intended to reproduce. At present i wasnt thinking of the maintenance manual, however if there is enough interest in it too we would surely consider it.

Cheers,
Ian.

Looking at the two repop manuals among the originals I have....the repops seem to have been produced in more than one way....

I have one that looks like the book was simply lain as flat as possible and a photograph taken of each page and there is some distortion to some pages near the binding.

I have one that is spiral bound but looks like the original was sacrificed and it's binding removed since the pages seem straight in it...

Will yours be marked in the inside cover so that they can be distinguished in five years from an original? Aside from having some CSI forensic investigation done on it?

Hi guys,

This would be done properly, no camera's, no spiral binding. My original will be pulled apart (as with all my other original manuals which have been reproduced), digitally scanned, any imperfections/stains/marks etc removed and then properly printed on a proper printing machine. They will be done by my father who has been a book printer for 44 years!

If you go to http://www.vintageengines.net/page10.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, you can see a small proportion of manuals which have been done by us in the past. The TM 9807 while not original, is spiral bound because it is so thick and we wanted it as a manual which could be used, not just break apart after a few openings like other repro's. My parents mostly do stationary engine and vintage car manuals, but with my interest in MV's, they have done some MV manuals as seen on the site.

Chuck, it is a very good point you make about the repro 'tag'. I shall look into it and let you know how we go. It should be easy to do and would be non invasive.

Dan- thanks mate. I shall note the interest in the maintenance manual too.

David. Yes mate, February 1942. This is the first (ever?) GPW parts list published for a 1st contract GPW. As far as i know, that is GPW's in the SN range 1-15000 (though i`m sure Tom W could give a more accurate number if i am wrong). The USA rego # is the easier way to go for this (but i guess not if the USA # isnt known).

Cheers,
Ian.

Ian...you are correct....those two manuals I pictured are the FIRST GPW CONTRACT MANUALS for GPWs 1-15,000 and there are exactly 15000 USA numbers from USA 2054778 tp 2069777.....

Your method of reproduction is flawless and is the "right" way to faithfully reproduce these two documents....first class and high quality.

Given the number of surviving manuals out there....for the GPWs anyway, I think anyone who wants the PARTS TM should also get the MAINTENANCE TM as they both have some interesting info on the things listed for the First Contract....

For a "repro tag" I would suggest placing "REPRINT" on the bottom right side of the front cover.

Yes, I would purchase both manuals.

My vote is to keep the reprint marking INSIDE on a clean (blank) page of the book, but indeed put one in there. I'm interested in both.

Do you have a timeframe?

Thanks
