Re: Sprague Filterette Color
Hello Sarge,
Very nice !!!
That is an early Ford Gpw type filterette.
In my opinion they are definitely the hardest to find, and the most expensive.
Hang onto it !!!!
My August , 1942 uses this type.
Many are missing the covers !
Tom mentioned above that the changeover was maybe June, 43 ?
I think that these type were changed over, nor sure when, but if your original jeep has it as an original one, it likely would be one of the last installed of that model !!
Looking forward to your post of your new fantastic survivor jeep !!
Best Regards,
Ray

Hello Sarge,
Your new Jeep is a real treasure having the Trifecta of matching numbers and still all original !!
I am looking forward to your post for it !!!
It is original and unrestored , and will be a great Jeep to restore the damaged areas , and preserve the rest, and blend in the needed repairs.
Best Regards,
Ray

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
I have a question.........
I have one of these but the data plate had been sandblasted! (As I received it)
Any idea who might reproduce?
Have not been able to get a response from Robert (dataplates4u)
Thanks

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
I have a few NOS Sprague JX17s in their original Ford boxes in my parts collection and they all look like the one I am posting a photo of…with slotted screws.
FYI…as previously stated these were used from approximately June 1942 to possibly early 1943…as existing stocks were used up. In Jan ‘43 many GPWs seem to have the Tobe logo embossed 1107DE with the transition to the Tobe 1107DEG having occurred by March 1943. My GPW-66380 has its original Ford tagged Mallory unit (GPW-18360 B3) installed. These units are nearly identical to the Solar EV103 units used in later production, minus the data tag.
My GPW-104111 was found with a ‘transitional type” Tobe 1107DEG installed. It has an 1107DEG cover, but with the 1107DE type plug screws and 1107DE internals. The standard Tobe 1107DEG has regular screw threads which threaded into the receptacles.

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
The filterette fitted to my GPW (April 21 1942 Dallas) is also a Ford labelled Sprague with regular bolts (no slot) and unpainted!! When I took off all the crud from 70+ years of use, it came out with a plated finish and NO traces of olive drab except for some overspray (which I re-applied upon reassembly of the vehicle)
So similar to the one from the original poster except for the colour.
It looks like they were fitted earlier than june 1942, judging by the one fitted to GPW17331, but I like to be proven otherwise.
And yes, the filterette is connected up.

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
Hello Klass,
That is very interesting !!
I saw an NOS unit on Ebay last year and a half ago from a big seller in Texas.
It was nos in the box, and was also unpainted metal, with the Ford tag on it. So yours likely was from a similar production batch of filterettes with no paint.
He also had many of the same type nos, and they were painted OD.
Unfortunately,
I did not buy one , as I thought he must have plenty still.
Well the last one sold, and he had no more.
I recently was fortunate to buy a used one on ebay, but it was twice the price of the nos ones.
My advice, don't hesitate to get the good stuff when you see it !!
Here is my recent purchase for my August 1942 Louisville GPW.
The filterette is there on the jeep, but is missing the cover . Now I have one !
Best Regards,
Ray

It then looks like there was at least one batch made without paint and possibly another batch with black paint as the one by the OP.
So not all are OD.....one for the GPW judging standards!!
You are right in getting the rare and good stuff when it pops up and not hesitate.
I got an original SOS Fire Guard Extinguisher complete with its bracket and an early First Aid Kit (complete with its original contents) for less money than the repro's cost from the Dutch Marketplace site a couple of years ago.
I have not seen them since...
Take care and stay safe!
