Sprague Filterette Color
I tried doing a search on this, but did not find any hits. I have one of the early Sprague GPW-18960 filterettes. The paint that remains on the filterette almost looks like the black wrinkle or crackle paint that you see on the voltage regulator (even under the tag). Is this correct? I can find no evidence that it was painted any other color. It still had F marked bolts to hold it to the firewall - so I presume it was mounted on a jeep at one time.
Thanks,
Andy

NOS filterettes for both Willys and Fords were Oilive Drab.
All I can help with is below.

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
Jon,
I really appreciate the info. The screws on the filterette cover are not slotted like yours. I don't see any OD paint at all on it. Do you know if this Filterette type may have been used on any other Ford vehicles (I guess that is unlikely as the # is prefixed with GPW)?
Thanks,
Andy

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
I did see that your box has no slot. but, I don't think there's any other difference, both tags are marked the same.
As I said previously Andy. . OD is all I know. never seen one black, although a few years ago I thought that there was a possibility they were, so in an endeavour to check I carefully stripped down what paint was there...nothing but bare metal...
By all means, if you're comfortable with re-doing it in a crackle or wrinkle black, go for it... It's your jeep.
I found some more photos......Hope it helps.
JR
I took my filterette right down to bare metal, no sign of black.....

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
Thanks for the help Jon. Out of curiosity why did you think there was a possibility of them being black? I had assumed OD on all as well. I will probably make the final call once I get the tag off and get a good look at what is under it. I am assuming the tag and side insulators were held on by tubular style rivets. Do you happen to remember the shank diameter and length of the ones you used?

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
What SN is your jeep? Could it be this was a transition box, or an early one by the company before they were told to paint them OD?

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
Hi Andy and Jon,
The Spargue type filterette would have been used on a GPW from about June, 42 through maybe early 43.
Jon, your GPW should have had a late style Malloy " GPW-18960 A3 * ( CORRECTION - should read GPW-18960 B3 ) or a late type Tobe-Deutschmann ( as seen as #4 on page 208 of All American Wonder 2). There were at least 5 main types of filterettes ( with some having various versions ) used on the GPW. All American Wonder does not cover the second ( very rare ) or fourth types of Filterettes used on a GPW.

My # is 20735 - but I bought the filterette from someone else and they are not sure about the details of the truck it came from. I had the same thought as you - perhaps it was an early one and maybe that explained why it was black and did not have the slots in the screws that hold the cover on. Obvious speculation - but the best one I could come up with .
Regardless - according to Tom's info it sounds like this one is incorrect for my jeep anyhow.

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
Hey Tom.....do you know if Sprague made a Filtrette with "FORD" on it that was a model GPW-18960-B?
I checked the TMs
April 10, '42
GPW-18960 - A-5980
Sep 19, '42
GPW-18960-B - A-1517
Mar 10, '43
GPW-18960-B - A-5980
Are the manuals the issue? In what context was the info you have on the Sprague GPW-18960 being used from June '42 - Early '43?
Can you run down the chronological order if your data gives that? It would help us to know which model/mfger to use in a GPW of any DOD that way. Thanks....

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
Hi Chuck,
I have not seen a GPW filterette between the Sprague GPW-18960 and the Mallory GPW-18960 B3.
I have to do a little digging before I can make a list of the GPW filterettes.

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
hi guys just to let you know that GPW sn 1728 / DOD 2-20-42 has the early sqaure filter with the hinged lid. This is attached to an umolested (unrestored)Ford script body without the swage behind the toolbox / correct locking glovebox latch / all data plates/ and even a paint tin lid gauge in situ. The frame is Willys / GPW stamped 1728 / 1 piece battery tray. The filter still has the original data plate on it and is totally covered in grime and has wires still sicking out of it - so i would be very surprised if it has be swapped at some stage - after the war why would anyone bother as they werent used.
BTW the engine # is 1691 - not matching but only 37 different!!!
hope this helps the debate

Re: Sprague Filterette Color
Wayne...can you clean off the data plate on the Filtrette and post what you find? Does the cover have one or two screws holding it to the unit, or does it have a hinged door.....GPW-18960 part number with a "B" or not? Sprague, Mallory, Solar or ?
