circular depression dashboard gpw ford
Hi everyone, I'm doing some research on this detail that is only found on Ford Gpw bodies: circular depression on the dashboard (see red circle photo) can you know exactly when this detail was introduced on Ford bodies? is there a reference contract number?

Re: circular depression dashboard gpw ford
Hello Vale,
Here are some posts on what it is, it is a knock out plug for a winterization kit, hand primer installation.
It was only added for a few months of GPW production in from mid April to mid to late September 1943, per Tom W.

A rare and interesting 1943 feature, for only part of the year's production !
Best Regards,
Ray

I used to own GPW 117138 and it had this feature. Ironically, today is its 79th birthday.
Built in Louisville
DOD 18 May 1943
USA # 20388282
Here are the contracts and the related USA #'s:
W-2425-QM-648 and W-374-ORD-2862
20364863-20443316, Inc.
I can't confirm the starting and ending USA # but they will be in this block.
Cheers,
Peter

Re: circular depression dashboard gpw ford
Thanks guys for the valuable information you give me.
this discussion is very interesting, Ford as you well know had 6 factories that produced Jeeps: Louisville, Dallas, Richmond, Edgewater, River rouge Detroit, Chester.
I ask some questions:
1) Has the circular depression of the dashboard been carried out by all the factories? or just from some factory?
2) I looked at the circular depression on an August '42 Ford GPW, could there be a Ford plant that produced bodies with this particular in 1942?
3) For all owners of 1942 Ford Script GPW and 1943 Ford you can check your cars and tell me if you have circular depression on the dashboard: write chassis number / Date of delivery or if you prefer to post a photo.
Thanks

Re: circular depression dashboard gpw ford
Hi Vale,
All Ford made body tubs were all made in the Lincoln factory, then assembled in different plants. As other posters have said, only from April to September 43

in the Lincoln factory all the bodies of the Ford GPW were made, and they were assembled in the other factories, so the engine was also made in Lincoln (River Rouge, Michigan)?

The Ford Lincoln car factory is where the GPW tubs/bodies were made. It is about 6-8 miles away from the Rouge River Ford plant where the engines were manufactured. Both locations are considered to be in the Detroit area.

Hello to all collectors of military vehicles, reading in some posts on g503 I have discovered that Mr. Tom Wolboltz is one of the best GPW Ford experts, is that correct?
do any of you have direct contact with him? (e-mail)
I would like to ask him some questions for useful information. Thank you Friends

Yes, Tom W. is probably the absolute BEST resource for many technical details regarding the Ford GPW as well as many other military vehicles!Vale 85 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 15, 2022 2:46 pmHello to all collectors of military vehicles, reading in some posts on g503 I have discovered that Mr. Tom Wolboltz is one of the best GPW Ford experts, is that correct?

I would also highly recommend the newly released GPW Judging Standards book by Michael Wright which can be purchased from the MVPA Historical Archives.

Re: circular depression dashboard gpw ford
FWIW, GPW 109628, late April/early May 1943, with a Ford body, did not have this feature. According to many sources it should have it, but it doesn't. It does have the non-scrip Ford body, as it should, so maybe only a certain batch of body tubs got the die punch treatment, or FILO/FIFO caused it, or maybe a body swap during a rebuild with a similar era GPW that was just outside of the batch that got it.
