USS Hornet Museum Honors Local WWII Pearl Harbor Survivor As He Shares His Firsthand Experience
Longtime Concord resident and Navy veteran E.J. Chuck Kohler will share his recollections of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor with museum visitors. The presentation will take place at 1:00PM.
On October 1941, Kohler reported for duty to Aerial Patrol Squadron VP#23, located on Ford Island in the center of Pearl Harbor. Kohler returned stateside in June of 1943. He served a short time at Naval Air Station Alameda and then requested to return to Pacific War Theater, serving in the island hopping campaign until October of 1945.
Kohler will also be honored as the recipient of a special “Quilt of Valor” in conjunction with the opening of a new museum exhibit. Only heroic veterans of the armed services receive such quilts.
“Quilts of Valor” Exhibit:
The Amador Valley Quilters is a non-profit organization that encourages community outreach through quilting. It sponsors The Quilts of Valor Rookie Quilt Project , which introduces members to the art of quilting and makes Quilts of Valor to honor Northern California Veterans who have been wounded in service to our country. The USS Hornet Museum will be displaying a selection of these quilts as a special exhibit. The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover all combat service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.
The day’s other activities include a performance by the Hornet Band from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
Normal museum hours and admission prices apply. Ample free parking is available across from the pier.
