How to ID a original Ford GP engine!!
Gee.
I am working on the engine now of my GP resto..this is the deal
I have a realy stupid problem I have three engines to put in my GP
Of one I know for sure it is not a GP engine as it has a 9n serial number.
A few original GP parts like oil pan etc came with it but it wil be a spare engine for parts.
The following engines are:
-GP engine with GP serial number, hole for the fuel pump etc. Came with 9n cylinder head. But original manifold etc etc...So this one is 100% correct for my GP...Only needs some rebuild for internal parts etc..no doubt this is an original engine.
-A few months ago I was lucky to buy a engine with a GP cylinder head for the price of just the head. it is an Engine with a new serial# rebuild in 1948 as a generator. (I think it is generator serial#?)So it has no GP serial# anymore. It does have the hole for the fuelpump. This engine is like new and does only needs new gasket kit..thats all. So I would like to use it in my GP. I am not 100% sure if this engine is a GP engine.
How can I be sure...the GP head and original manifold and oil pan are all parts that can be taken of...so how can I ID 100% sure the bare engine that it is original when I do not have the original serial# on it anymore? Do GP engines have unique casting numbers? This engine has different numbers then my original GP engine aswell as my 9n engine.
Who can help me and is the ultimate GP doktor out there? I can provide as many pics as you like!

GP Engine
Jacco, I too have an ID problem, my GP came with 2 engines, # 1 is aprox 500 off my 2nd series GP S#, The block S# Starts off with "GP" then the #, the 2nd Block has the hole for the Fuel Pump, Painted OD, and has a S# that would be correct for a 1st Series GP, But the # does not Start with "GP" the first block is the one i will use but, what is the 2nd one?, Generator, Replacement motor or GP?, Thanks

I was posting on the last thread anyway, so I was online. AND I THINK I KNOW THE ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION!!!!!!!!!!!! (Jim will probably prove me wrong?!!!) Take off the oil pan. Look, up inside the block. If it is an original GP motor it will have GP cast into the INSIDE of the block. Will that solve your questions?????????????????????

Bruce is correct that the GP motor will have GP cast inside the block. I believe I posted that some time ago but I should add...........
This is an ID for the block only. Some generator motors may have blocks that have the GP cast in the inside of the block as well.
If the motor number stamped on the pad on the block starts with "GP-" then it is/was a GP motor
If the motor number is something other than GP such as ON or NC then it was not a GP motor when it was built.
If there is no number stamped on it then it was a replacement motor (or block).
Remember, these motors were used on cars, trucks, pickups and generators as well as GP's. Only motors used in the GP will have a GP prefix on the stamped motor number.
Hope this clears this up.

Re: How to ID a original Ford GP engine!!
Hi everyone don't really know where to post this question. I bought a 1947 8N tractor that does not have the original engine it would have started out with 8N. My block has a GP<->8788. So looking on the internet kinda lead me here believe it might be out of a surplus jeep. Any Help would be appreciated

Does it have a opening for a fuel pump to bolt in?

Re: How to ID a original Ford GP engine!!
Post some pictures of the block, serial number pad, head if it says gp. For sure the fuel pump hole, intake and exhaust if downdraft. if you cant post email me the pics and i will post them 4 U. most likely the front mounts and distributor have been changed to fit the tractor.
GP engines are for pre war prototype jeeps. There are lots of posts on here for where internal serial numbers may be.
