Canvas for March 1941 Ford GP very early series 1

Post by bonanza » Thu Jun 24, 2021 6:20 am

Before I go ordering canvas for my very early March 1941 Ford GP, is anyone aware of the canvas used? Historically, who made the canvas for the first Ford jeeps and can I assume that it would have been "winter canvas"? What edging was used? Are there any references I can use?

Maurizio,
Please describe your canvas. How early in series one is the GP. Colour, edging, straps. any manufacturers identification, etc. Essentially, I am after historical data because my GP is very, very early in series 1. Any photos would be of great benefit.
Regards, Bonanza.

sorry, I didn't notice your message. I will try to to make a couple of pictures tomorrow. if I remember correctly, I have two originals.

why are you talking about details? according to the Parts List manual, item GP1152700 is the only one produced and listed for the whole GP production.

I am trying to be careful in the execution of my very early Series 1 GP. Changes were made during the first few (how many ?) to produce the standardised GP we all know.
Cheers, Bonanza.

"trying to be careful" is a nice thing. but evidences are evidences. there're few differences between the two "runs" (there are NO 1st or 2nd series indeed...), and all of them are known.

about tarpaulin, make your homework...

;-)

...by the way, talking about "standardised" GP is a negation in terms: none GP was "standardised.

here the promised pictures about my two original GP tarpaulins.

about shrinkage, in the last picture you can see one of those tarpaulin attache (the other way round, but it doesn't matter) to my GP's windscreen: it fits. I had no way to try it on the back or about the length...

pierino,
I appreciate your effort. Your photography is superb.

I don't like assuming, but please verify that your canvas was originally dark green in keeping with Beachwood Canvas "OD7".

Regards,
Bonanza.
