Another GP accounted for!
Hi Guys,
I am new here at G503, but not new to Jeeps. I currently own 4 Jeeps including a 46 CJ2A, 48 Willys Pickup, a 93 YJ, and a 2005 TJ Rubicon. I've been a lurker here for a long time, but finally signed up.
Here is my GP story:
For the past 10 years or so I have driven past this old arrow board sign, always thinking it was cool and would look good restored in my shop. About a month ago I was driving by and happen to see the owner of the property where the arrow was walking down his driveway to get his mail. I took a chance and stopped to ask if he would be interested in selling it. He was a bit reluctant, and said, well "maybe in a month or so". So I gave him my phone number and truly didn't expect to hear from him. Well, last Saturday I get a phone call from him saying he is willing to sell it. So I met him on Sunday and picked up the arrow sign. While I was about to leave, I happen to mention something about how I work on and "collect" Jeeps. He says "Well I have an old Jeep out in the pasture that I'd be willing to sell, take a ride out there on your way out and check it out". He described it as what he thought was a 46, and to me it sounded like a CJ2A, so I didn't think TOO much of it. So on my way out I drove out to take a look at it, and to my surprise it definitely wasn't a 2A, it was indeed a GP. So fast forward to today, I officially have purchased and drug home this awesome piece of lost and forgotten history!
Unfortunately the years of neglect sitting out in a field after it was frankensteined into a plow truck with a Chevrolet 283 and a "CJ3B" looking high hood "addition" have taken its toll on the old girl. I do not know if a restoration would even be possible in its present condition, without finding a donor body and possibly a donor frame. But either way, I could not let her get sent to the scrap yard or continue to rot out there. At the very least, there are a good deal of salvageable parts that could be used to resurrect one of her brothers who may not be in such rough condition. Its missing its original engine obviously, but does have its orig axles I believe. I am not 100% sure about the tranny/transfercase, I need to investigate them more. Once I carefully cut off and remove the extra bars that were added to the top of the grill to make it high enough for the "3B high hood addition", the original grill will be an excellent survivor as it is extremely solid.
One AWESOME thing about this GP though is that fact that its original data plate was still attached, and legible. Its serial number is 16341, and its date of delivery is 10-29-41. So it can be added to the registry as officially "found"!
Oh, and the guy wanted the plow that was on it, so the pics with the plow are from the day I first saw it. He told me he would remove the plow prior to me coming to pick it up, and that he did..... he got a bit crazy with the torch and cut the front bumper clean in 1/3's as you can see in the pics from today. However, I do not think the bumper was original, so its not a big deal.

Wow--they are still out there! Odd to note how much time and effort was put into the grill modification.

Re: Another GP accounted for!
Thanks for all of the replies and kind words guys! I have done some research and talked to a few great members on the board this weekend and have made the decision to do a full restoration on this old girl! I cannot see her get parted out and become "lost" forever. These vehicles mean too much and are too rare to not put some time and $ into. Both of my grandfathers served in WWII, and I really want to do this restoration in their honor. Thanks in advance for all of your help!

Yes ...crazy the energy they put to modify this thing in a cj jeep...extending the grill and engine compartment...otherwise very nice find and very restorable.

To Mr. Lucky, great find and I look forward to seeing more on the find. There appears to be quite a bit left of her and so restoration is feasible. Have fun!

Re: Another GP accounted for!
Very interesting !!!
This is a very late GP.......
The original motor was assembled at the Ford Rouge Plant (Dearborn, MI. ) on 10/24/41.
It is one of the last GP's made and was part of the last contract for them.
SLOWLY...and CAREFULLY......(using #300 grit sandpaper)..sand the hood sides and see if the original USA numbers can be found. This will also be on the left rear of the rear body panel.

Re: Another GP accounted for!
Thanks so much for the info Jim! Yes, definitely one of the last GP's produced. I am hoping to finally have some time tomorrow to check for the frame number on it as well as check for a few other part numbers, AND yes, hopefully find those hood numbers! I will report back with what I find.

Northern IL? Another Bergs jeep most likely. I'm still combing northern Wisconsin for one of the round-nosed Bantams that came out of Bergs!
