M170 Ambulance Contract Numbers

Post by muttguru » Sat Jan 25, 2020 2:46 pm

I'm planning on doing some research into the M170 ambulance production and I would like to ask if anyone has information about Army contract numbers:-

I understand that batches of M170s were delivered in 1954, 1955, and then in 1961, 1962 and 1963. Was a separate contract signed in each of those years, or were they MYP (multi-year-production) contracts .....ie one contract for years 1954-55 and one for 1961-63?
Does anyone have details of the Contract Number(s) from the dataplate(s)?
Were the 1961-63 vehicles delivered with Packard connectors or were they still Douglas-type?
Does anyone keep a record of "Hood Numbers"?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Thanks
Ken

Thanks, ND....... looks like you are the only one with an M170 (or the only one to own up so far) :)

Kind regards....

Ken,
From memory and looking over photos on my web site http://www.odcloth.com/1955m170.html, the 1955 M170 had a mix of both connectors. The dash lights (and I think the gauges) were Packard. The Black Out Marker and Black Out Stop Light were Packard. All others were Douglas as I recall. I'm sure, based on my observations at the time, that the later production units used all Packard connectors and the M151 style air cleaner.

We had a 1954 dated M-170 in the motorpool and I seem toremember it as the first G-758 Jeep having Packard commectors.

The M-170 I was referring to was USA 1A-8419. It had a mix of Packard/Douglas connectors.

Many thanks to everyone who responded.

If anyone can tell me the actual Contract Number(s) for M170 ambulances, it would be a great help. At this stage I'm not looking for the numbers produced, I'm only looking for the Army Contract (such as DA20-113-etc-etc) which should be on the dash dataplate.
If I can pin down the Contract Number or Numbers, I can then attempt to discover how many M170 vehicles were produced for each of those contracts (I'm guessing that there would only be two or three DA contracts in the nine years of production).

Thanks
Ken

Thanks for the information folks. Looks like the M170 Ambulance contract was the same as the regular M38A1 contract..... I'll have to check if the later (1963) M170 contract was the same as those late model versions of the regular M38A1.
When I get further with the project I'll update everyone.
Thanks....

DA-33-019-ORD 630 was issued in Nov 62 and didn't include M170's.

It must have been updated because I know March and May 1954 M170's had the 630 suffix.

I have October 1954 daily Willys Motors (Kaiser) production figures, and this subject may be muddled by the end of Korea and the cancellation of M38A1 orders. When Jeep protested, the Gov't switched the M38A1 orders to M170 orders.

The later M170 production should have been under DA-33-019-ORD-3897 issued April30 1962 ???
